Wallpaper Mountains of Windows XP in Xieng Khouang, Laos
If you have ever used a Windows XP computer, no one can be unfamiliar with the classic wallpaper called “Bliss,” a bright green grassy hill with gently curved mountains against a clear blue sky. The image looks like it was carefully crafted with graphic software. But for me, mr.hotsia, who had the chance to travel to Xieng Khouang Province, Laos, I declare that “this is the actual place that inspired that wallpaper.”
I traveled from Luang Prabang straight to Muang Phak in Xieng Khouang Province. This route allowed me to see mountains that seemed to come right out of Microsoft’s computer screen. At nearly 1,000 meters above sea level, the weather here is cool and comfortable. There are very few large trees; mostly it’s lush green grass fields stretching endlessly, exactly like the grassy hills in that wallpaper.
Along the way, I noticed locals using these grasslands to herd cattle and buffaloes in long stretches spanning kilometers. The wide fields without buildings blocking the view preserve the natural beauty perfectly. This is the charm of Xieng Khouang that many people don’t know yet, and it’s why I want to recommend it to nature-loving travelers.
The Path of Nature and Xieng Khouang’s Way of Life
If you travel from Luang Prabang to Xieng Khouang, you will pass through forests and mountains almost all the way, with very few houses visible. Occasionally, you’ll see small villages with sparse inhabitants. Along the way, there are rest stops in villages selling silk fabrics and local buffet-style food at affordable prices. I stopped to eat there and must say the meal exceeded my expectations. Authentic Laotian food in a homely atmosphere made me feel as if I were dining with old family friends.
From that rest stop, after about 4-5 more hours of travel, the familiar curved mountains and bright green grass fields like those in the Windows XP wallpaper gradually appeared fully in view. This is the route I recommend traveling during the daytime to fully enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Muang Phak and the Plain of Jars: Interesting Destinations in Xieng Khouang
Muang Phak, which I passed through, is a town with many pine trees because it is located about 1,000 meters above sea level. The terrain is mostly mountains and grasslands just like the wallpaper image. Although it is a relatively remote town and not very well known to tourists, this area has important attractions such asthe Plain of Jarswhich attracts tourists from all over the world.
The atmosphere in Muang Phak and surrounding areas is filled with peace and genuine natural beauty that is rare to find nowadays. I chose this route as a passage before heading to Sam Neua and crossing into Vietnam because I wanted to truly experience the traditional Laotian way of life.
Savoring Local Food and Lifestyle in Phonsavan
Before leaving Xieng Khouang, I recommend stopping by the morning market in Phonsavan, the capital of Xieng Khouang Province. Here you can find a variety of local foods, including steamed rice typical of Laos (which is different from the sticky rice of Northeastern Thailand) and made-to-order dishes with authentic Laotian bold flavors.Sanga Restaurantis one of my favorite places, open at night and popular with both tourists and local Laotians. The menu includes dishes like larb with bean sprouts and other made-to-order meals that feel warm and homely.
The Xieng Khouang morning market offers a perfect blend of Hmong tribal and native Laotian cultures. The Hmong here prefer sticky rice less than steamed rice, so Thai visitors don’t need to worry much about food because there are many familiar and tasty options.
The Origin of the Wallpaper Mountains and the Secret of the Bombed City
Many might wonder where Microsoft actually took the Windows XP wallpaper photo. I believe it’s possible that programmers or photographers involved may have vacationed in Xieng Khouang and were impressed by its nature, capturing beautiful images shared worldwide. Additionally, I had the chance to visitBombed City of Xieng Khouangwhich was heavily bombed during the American war. Although bomb clearance has increased, some areas still contain unexploded ordnance, so extra caution is needed when traveling in the forests and mountains of this province.
Tourism here is not only about natural beauty but also history and the stories of the people, giving Xieng Khouang a unique charm that travelers like me, mr.hotsia, want to share.
Travel Tips and Important Information
If you are interested in traveling to Xieng Khouang, I recommend starting atXieng Khouang Bus Station (Phonsavanh - Phonsavan)which is the main hub for onward travel to the Plain of Jars or Muang Phak. Buses from Luang Prabang pass through this station daily, taking about 8-10 hours to reach Sam Neua or Muang Phak.
This route is suitable for travelers who enjoy nature and want to experience authentic local life. Especially traveling during the day allows you to fully appreciate the Windows XP mountain scenery.
