Plain of Jars, Xieng Khouang: Experience the mysterious beauty of history beneath the shadow of bombs

When talking about unique tourist attractions in Xieng Khouang Province, Laos, the namePlain of Jarsdefinitely ranks at the top of the list. For me,mr.hotsiaMy latest visit to the Plain of Jars in 2014 was a distinctly different and more impressive experience compared to four years earlier, especially in terms of convenience and increased knowledge about this place.

Xieng Khouang is a large province in eastern Laos, with Phonsavan as its important center. Most tourists use the Phonsavan bus station as a starting point before traveling to the Plain of Jars. I have shared aboutXieng Khouang Bus Stationbefore that traveling in this province has become much easier. Hiring a private car to the Plain of Jars is no longer difficult, especially if you stay at the Night Guesthouse in Phonsavan, which I personally chose. They offer tour services and car arrangements, making the 2014 trip to the Plain of Jars much easier and more comfortable.

Plain of Jars: The mystery of ancient stone jars and the museum that tells their story

The Plain of Jars is an archaeological site filled with hundreds of large stone jars dating back over a thousand years. These jars are carved from sandstone and feature a distinctive rounded bottom with tightly sealed lids. Lao people believe the Plain of Jars was created for mysterious ritualistic fermentation of alcohol. Some legends say that ancient rulers wanted to brew large quantities of alcohol for celebrations, so they ordered craftsmen to carve these jars and place them in areas with flowing water to aid fermentation. Over time, these jars have turned into the stone formations we see today.

When you visit the Plain of Jars in 2014, I recommend stopping by the visitor center and Plain of Jars museum first, located just 1 kilometer from the actual site. Here, you can learn about the origin of the Plain of Jars as well as the history of U.S. bombing during the Indochina War, which damaged many jars or left visible cracks. The museum also demonstrates how bombs were dropped in the area, helping visitors better understand the historical context.

Traveling and touring the Plain of Jars today

After purchasing your ticket at the visitor center, an electric golf cart service will take tourists directly to the Plain of Jars. Traveling is more convenient and safer than previous visits I made. You can walk among the jars along designated paths, each with its own story and mystery.

On the way back, a shuttle will bring you from the tour area back to the visitor center. There is an interesting souvenir shop here, especially selling items made from leftover bomb fragments. I bought a bottle opener made from bomb scrap as a meaningful and unique souvenir.

Important Warning: Beware of unexploded ordnance at the Plain of Jars

I must emphasize this seriously because Xieng Khouang still has many unexploded bombs that have not been cleared. Along the electric golf cart route to the Plain of Jars, you will see officials working on bomb disposal. These bombs are not to be taken lightly. Do not walk off the path under any circumstances, and never urinate or venture deep into the forest without a guide, as it can be extremely dangerous.

The three groups of the Plain of Jars: Exploring wonders throughout Xieng Khouang Province

The Plain of Jars I mentioned is not just one site but consists of three main groups. The first group is the largest, with about 250 jars, located approximately 15 kilometers southeast of Phonsavan. Each jar weighs between 600 kilograms and 1 ton, with the largest weighing up to 6 tons.

The second group is about 25 kilometers south of Phonsavan, with around 90 jars. The third group is about 10 kilometers further from the second group (or 35 kilometers from Phonsavan) and contains about 150 jars. All three groups are significant and open to tourists for a small entrance fee of about 20 baht.

Life in Phonsavan and the atmosphere of the Xieng Khouang community

After visiting the Plain of Jars, I recommend exploring the atmosphere in Phonsavan, the main town of Xieng Khouang Province. Here, you can experience authentic Lao lifestyle that remains simple and warm. The morning marketXieng Khouangis a very interesting place for tourists who want to taste local food and buy fresh produce such as vegetables, fruits, and a variety of local dishes.

Food here is not a problem as many might think because people in this region prefer sticky rice alternatives similar to those in central and northern Thailand. I personally enjoy dining at the “Sanga” restaurant, which opens at night and serves authentic Lao dishes like larb with bean sprouts, blending rustic flavors that are delicious and clean. It’s an experience you shouldn’t miss when visiting here.

The natural beauty and landscape of Xieng Khouang

If you have the chance to travel from Luang Prabang to Muang Pak or Phonsavan, you will encounter scenery as beautiful asWindows XP Wallpaper in Xieng KhouangThe high mountains covered with bright green grasslands against a blue sky make me feel refreshed and want to stop frequently to take photos. The terrain here averages over 1,000 meters above sea level, with cool weather year-round and scattered pine trees, which is different from other parts of Laos. This makes Xieng Khouang a great destination for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility.

Summary: Plain of Jars, Xieng Khouang - A mystery you must experience yourself

Visiting the Plain of Jars is not just about seeing ancient artifacts but experiencing historical stories, hardships during the war, and the enduring natural beauty. I,mr.hotsiarecommend preparing well regarding safety, booking accommodation in advance, and arranging tours through guesthouses like the Night Guesthouse in Phonsavan, which will help you travel to the Plain of Jars conveniently and safely.
