Simmalee Guesthouse, accommodation in the heart of Pakseong, the coffee city of southern Laos
When talking about accommodation in Pakseong, one of the options I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation isSimmalee GuesthouseThis place is not just budget accommodation but a spot that allows us to experience the local lifestyle closely with reasonable comfort in this small town.
For those who have been to Pakseong, you probably know that accommodations here are not as abundant as in larger tourist cities. Most are affordable guesthouses lined along the main road. Prices generally range from 50,000 to 80,000 kip, or about 200-400 Thai baht, which is suitable for backpackers or travelers who prioritize sightseeing over luxury stays.
I chose to stay at Simmalee Guesthouse because it isright in the center of Pakseong townextremely convenient for travel, plus they offer motorcycle rentals, which is very helpful for those wanting to explore the town or visit famous waterfalls like Sekatam Waterfall, a well-known spot in the area, without relying on tour buses or taxis that usually cost more than renting a vehicle yourself.
The atmosphere at Simmalee Guesthouse when I arrived in December 2010 was quite peaceful. The owners, P'Rid and his girlfriend P'Simmalee, are native Laotians. Both speak Vietnamese, are gentle and very friendly, making me feel like I was staying at a friend's house ready to give advice and help with traveling around Pakseong.
The place is clean and well-maintained, with laundry services which, for a traveler like me, is very convenient. After tiring motorcycle rides around Pakseong, being able to wash clothes and rest in a clean room was truly heaven.
Pakseong, the city of coffee and beautiful waterfalls
Before diving deeper into the accommodation, I want to share a bit about Pakseong’s atmosphere. Pakseong is located in Champasak Province, about 50 kilometers from Pakse. The route from Pakse to Pakseong involves gradual mountain driving, and you can really feel the cooler air here compared to Pakse and Champasak because it is situated at an elevation comparable to Thailand’s Phu Kradueng.
Pakseong is considered the coffee capital of southern Laos. Coffee is grown extensively here and exported abroad. Visitors will enjoy the fresh aroma of coffee carried by the breeze, giving this small town a unique charm different from other tourist towns in Laos.
Besides coffee, Pakseong also has many beautiful waterfalls popular with Thai tourists, such as Tad Fane Waterfall, Tad Yeuang Waterfall, and Phasoum Waterfall. Traveling to these waterfalls is much easier if you rent a motorcycle from Simmalee Guesthouse or within town, allowing you to stop by small villages and scenic viewpoints along the way at your leisure.
My personal experience with Simmalee Guesthouse
I, mr.hotsia, clearly remember that when I stayed here, P'Rid and P'Simmalee gave detailed advice about tourist spots, whether it was Sekatam Waterfall or even Thong Wai Temple, an ancient temple in Pakseong. They knew the area well and were happy to share directions without holding back any information.
The accommodation is next to a local restaurant selling cheap and delicious food, perfect for those who enjoy authentic Lao papaya salad or grilled chicken with hot sticky rice like me. It’s easy and convenient to eat here since it’s just a short walk from the rooms.
Regarding booking, I recommend that you don’t need to book far in advance in Pakseong, except during long holidays or major festivals because accommodations are limited and many Thai tourists visit. Booking by phone is easy and affordable; just dial +856 20 99343111 to contact Simmalee Guesthouse directly.
Connecting travel and other trips in Champasak
For those planning to continue traveling from Pakseong, I, mr.hotsia, suggest studying travel options toPhu Temple Ruinsor touring Champasak town, which is not far from Pakse and features the World Heritage site Wat Phu Temple. You can also take a boat trip along the Mekong River inthe Mekong River fishing boat trip in Champasakas well.
If you want to experience a local market atmosphere with a variety of goods and Mekong River seafood, I recommend stopping byTalat Laksib See Marketin Pakse, a market with fresh produce and a large Vietnamese community, offering an interesting glimpse into southern Laos life.
Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
For me, Simmalee Guesthouse is not just accommodation but the starting point of a journey that helped me understand and appreciate Pakseong more. Talking with the friendly owners who know the area well made this trip much more complete.
If you want to visit Pakseong, try staying here. It’s not luxurious or expensive but warm and offers a genuine local lifestyle experience. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee you will take home great memories.
