Travel Pakxong, the city of coffee and waterfalls in Champasak Province, Laos

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to a small town hidden in the valley of Champasak Province, Laos, which isPakxongThe coffee capital of southern Laos, which I had the chance to experience myself. Pakxong is not just an ordinary small town but a charming place with beautiful nature and a rich coffee culture, making it one of the top coffee cities in Laos.

Getting to Pakxong

For those planning to visit Pakxong, I recommend starting from Pakse city, the capital of Champasak Province and the easiest travel hub to get here. From Pakse to Pakxong is about 50 kilometers, taking just over an hour by car. The route slowly climbs the mountain, and you might not notice the altitude rising until you feel the cool mountain air similar to Thailand’s Phu Kradueng National Park.

If you want freedom to explore, I suggest renting a motorcycle in Pakse or Pakxong. The average price is around 60,000-80,000 kip. Renting a motorcycle lets you conveniently visit waterfalls and villages around Pakxong, making your trip more fun than just joining tours or riding shared trucks.

Pakxong, the coffee city you must try

Arriving in Pakxong, the first thing you’ll notice is the aroma of freshly roasted coffee filling the town. Pakxong grows a lot of coffee in its highlands and exports it abroad, earning the title of the coffee capital of southern Laos. Driving into town, the coffee scent is so strong you can almost breathe it in deeply.

In town, there is a famous coffee shop calledPakxong Coffeewhere they process coffee from grinding beans, peeling, roasting, to brewing with a unique espresso machine. I tried their coffee; it was smooth, fresh, and had a distinctive aroma. It’s an experience every coffee lover should not miss.

Besides coffee, the atmosphere of Pakxong is filled with coffee plantations lining the main road, offering beautiful views like walking through a fresh green flower field — a memory I will never forget.

Beautiful waterfalls around Pakxong you must visit

Pakxong is not only about coffee. The area has many waterfalls, each with its own charm. I recommend renting a motorcycle to tour these waterfalls, which is fun and lets you experience the lifestyle of small villages around them.

Popular waterfalls well-known among Thai travelers includeTat Fan Waterfall, Tad Yeuang WaterfallandPha Suam Waterfallwhich have plenty of reviews and general information available. But for me, traveling independently is very easy — just rent a motorcycle in Pakxong and follow the clearly marked signs.

Another waterfall that impressed me greatly isSekatam Waterfallthe tallest waterfall in Laos with very little information available. I have already written about it on my website. For those who want a deep, peaceful experience, I recommend staying at least two nights in Pakxong and visiting Sekatam Waterfall as I did.

Accommodation and local food in Pakxong

Regarding accommodation in Pakxong, I can say there’s no need to worry because there are many places and prices are much cheaper than in Pakse. When I visited, I stayed atSimali Guesthousealso known as Simali Hotel. The rooms were very clean and cost only 320 baht per night. I even had fun bargaining with the owner in Vietnamese.

As for food, there are many restaurants on the main road, mostly cheaper than in Pakse. There are also grilled pork restaurants called “Jin Dad” by locals, Lao papaya salad shops, Vietnamese pho places near Pakxong Coffee that I recommend, and good local eateries with affordable prices.

Dining here lets you experience authentic southern Lao lifestyle, and you’ll feel the cost of living is much lower than in Pakse — perfect for travelers who enjoy a relaxed, unhurried trip.

Lifestyle and interesting places near Pakxong

If you like history and archaeology, don’t miss visitingThe Ancient Eight-Sok People at Ban Thong Waian archaeological site recently discovered and still little known by locals. I have prepared information and GPS coordinates in my article, so you can easily ride a motorcycle there yourself.

Regarding money and public services in Pakxong, you need to prepare a bit. There is a bank but no ATM machines, so if you need cash, it’s best to withdraw from Pakse in advance. Interestingly, many coffee shops offer free Wi-Fi, making communication much easier.

Connecting Pakxong trips with other attractions in Champasak

For those planning to explore southern Laos fully, I recommend linking your trip to visitWat Phu Templea World Heritage Site,Wat Phu Champasak Templewhich is not far from Pakse. If you have time, don’t misstaking a fishing boat trip on the Mekong River in Champasakto truly experience the riverside local life.

I, mr.hotsia, spent two full nights in Pakxong exploring waterfalls and coffee plantations, tasting local food thoroughly before heading to Sekong city nearby. It was a peaceful and fulfilling trip.

Summary

Pakxong is a small town full of natural charm and captivating coffee culture. The cool weather is perfect for relaxation. Beautiful waterfalls and small villages around let you experience the simple life of southern Laos. Traveling here is easy; just have the heart to explore and open yourself to new experiences.
