Journey from Pakse to Pak Song: The gateway to the coffee town and beautiful nature of southern Laos

Hello everyone, I am mr.hotsia. I had the chance to travel winding from Pakse to Pak Song, a small town hidden in the high mountains of Champasak Province, Laos. This journey was not just moving from one point to another but experiencing the atmosphere and way of life that changes with the altitude and the slow winding mountain roads.

Starting at Pakse: The travel hub and resting point

If you are traveling from Thailand, the most convenient starting point is Ubon Ratchathani Province, then take a bus to Pakse, the capital of Champasak Province. This is the main gateway for tourists wanting to explore southern Laos.Traveling from Ubon to Pakseis not complicated. There are buses running all day, taking about 3 hours. Upon arrival in Pakse, you will find the interesting Talat Sipsong Market. If you are interested in ancient culture, I recommend visitingAncient Ban Pak Sok Wat Thong Waito enhance your travel perspective.

Traveling to Pak Song: The mountain ascent full of natural views

From Pakse Southern Bus Station, there are large songthaews running to Pak Song all day. This vehicle will take you slowly up the mountain over about 50 kilometers. Though not far, the mountain road makes it feel like you are really high up. Along the way, you will notice the air getting cooler, especially after halfway. I, mr.hotsia, warn you not to underestimate the need for warm clothes because the weather here is much colder than expected.

The trip takes about 1 hour and a bit. If you want freedom to explore the forest and waterfalls along the way, I recommend renting a motorcycle in Pakse. The price is around 60,000-80,000 kip, and you must leave your passport with the owner, which is normal here. Riding a motorcycle slowly up the mountain allowed me to fully enjoy the scenery on both sides, including lush forests, small hidden villages, and close encounters with the local way of life.

Tad Yeuang Waterfall: A kind nature stopover

If riding a motorcycle, you will find Tad Yeuang Waterfall at kilometer 40, known locally as “Lak 40.” It takes some time to reach from Pakse but is worth the stop to breathe fresh air and photograph the beautiful waterfall. This waterfall is only 3 kilometers off the main road. It is one of the key attractions of Pak Song, which also has several other waterfalls to visit, such as Tad Fane Waterfall and Pha Suam Waterfall, well-known among Thai and international tourists.Exploring Pak Song, Pakse City, Champasak ProvinceI have provided full information about these waterfalls, but I want to share from experience that having a motorcycle gives you much more flexible travel planning.

Pak Song, the coffee town with cool weather

After Tad Yeuang Waterfall, just about 10 kilometers further is Pak Song town, famous as the “coffee capital of Laos” because this area produces high-quality coffee exported worldwide. The weather here is noticeably cooler than Pakse, as it is located at a high altitude comparable to Thailand’s Phu Kradueng. Most accommodations in Pak Song do not have air conditioning but do have hot water, which is more essential for the chilly mornings.

I, mr.hotsia, enjoy the atmosphere of this small town that remains simple yet full of charm from the local lifestyle and the aroma of fresh coffee grown around the town. Walking through the local market or stopping for coffee at small shops run by locals lets you truly experience the sincerity and friendliness of the people here.

Pak Song trip with mr.hotsia: Travel tips and real experiences

For travelers planning to visit Pak Song from Pakse, I recommend choosing the travel method that suits your style. If you prefer convenience, the songthaew from Pakse Southern Bus Station is a good and affordable option. But if you want freedom and close contact with nature, renting a motorcycle is my favorite choice. Besides enjoying the roadside views, you can stop at waterfalls or small villages along the way without time limits.

What to prepare for this trip besides your passport and kip money is warm clothing, as the weather in Pak Song is much colder than expected, even during December, which is the winter season in southern Laos.

If you are interested in history and other attractions in Champasak Province, I recommend visitingWat Phu Templea UNESCO World Heritage site located in Champasak town not far from Pakse. This kind of trip will perfectly complete your southern Laos experience.

Summary

Traveling from Pakse to Pak Song with mr.hotsia is not just about changing locations but entering a new world with cool air and the aroma of fresh coffee. Many beautiful waterfalls await your discovery. The peaceful and friendly local lifestyle made me feel relaxed and impressed every time I visit.
