Traveling from Ubon Ratchathani to Pakse: An easy route many might not know

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will share my real experience crossing the border from Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand to Pakse city, Champasak province, Laos. Although this route seems simple for those who have traveled it before, there are small details that many often overlook, making the trip more complicated than it should be. I want to share straightforward information so those interested in this journey can prepare thoroughly.

Starting at Ubon Ratchathani: Ticket Purchase and Preparation Before Boarding

If you have a passport ready, traveling to Laos requires no visa and you can stay for 30 days under Laos regulations. Buying a bus ticket from Ubon Ratchathani Bus Terminal (BKS Ubon) is convenient. Staff sell tickets daily without advance booking. The fare is about 200 baht per person. The first bus departs at 9:30 AM, and tickets are sold starting at 8:10 AM. For a comfortable ride, I recommend sitting on the left side in the morning as the sun is less intense. When I traveled, I tried sitting on the right side and it was almost unbearably hot.

Passing Chong Mek Checkpoint: Border Crossing Procedures You Should Know

When the bus arrives at Chong Mek checkpoint (Thai side), everyone must get off to have their passport stamped out of Thailand. Then, walk to the Laos side called Wang Tao checkpoint to get the entry stamp. If you have never crossed before, it might feel a bit confusing, but the distance between the two checkpoints is short. Just follow others. My advice is to ask officials to fill out the entry-exit card in advance on the bus or at the terminal to avoid rushing at the checkpoint, which can waste time.

From Chong Mek Checkpoint to Pakse: Travel Options and Transfers

After passing the Laos checkpoint, the bus goes directly to Pakse Bus Station. This trip takes about 3 hours. When you arrive at Pakse Bus Station, don’t rush to agree on prices with tuk-tuks or three-wheelers immediately, as the initial prices are often inflated. Tuk-tuks here start at about 200 baht, which I find too expensive. Actually, if you wait until the vehicle is full, there are songthaews (shared trucks) going into town for only 50 baht. This is my preferred way because you get to see local life and the atmosphere of Pakse city at the same time.

If You Only Want to Visit Chong Mek: Budget Options You Should Know

For those who don’t plan to go to Pakse but just want to visit Chong Mek checkpoint, there is a good option: take a van directly from Ubon Ratchathani Bus Terminal to Chong Mek for only 90 baht. Some people choose to transfer to a van crossing into Laos and then continue to Pakse, with similar prices. It depends on your convenience and schedule.

Pakse: Gateway to Champasak Province and the Start of Adventures in Southern Laos

Upon arrival in Pakse, you will find it is the capital of Champasak Province with an indescribable charm. The city lies along the Mekong River and offers many local markets and authentic Lao restaurants. I recommend trying local dishes such as Lao papaya salad, grilled chicken, and sticky rice. The flavors here are delicious and prices are very reasonable.

Accommodation in Pakse ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels. If you want to experience real local life, I suggest strolling through Pakse’s morning and evening markets or visiting Wat Phu temple ruins, which are not far from the city, as I have described inTraveling to Wat Phu Temple RuinsThis is a UNESCO World Heritage site worth exploring to learn about Laos’ history and culture.

Continuing Routes: From Pakse to Other Towns in Champasak Province

Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia

Traveling from Ubon Ratchathani to Pakse is easier and more convenient than many think. Just have your passport ready and you’re good to go. There are multiple bus schedules. Crossing Chong Mek checkpoint is straightforward if you prepare your entry-exit card and don’t be alarmed when you have to get off the bus for stamping. Most importantly, know the fair prices for transfers in Pakse to avoid being overcharged.
