Travel Don Khong: The Mekong River island you must experience yourself
When talking about southern Laos tourism, especially in Champasak Province, the name “Don Khong” is one of the spots that mr.hotsia must recommend without hesitation. This is the largest island in the middle of the Mekong River with a unique charm. It is 8 kilometers wide and over 16 kilometers long, where the Mekong River splits into many channels before becoming “Si Phan Don” or Four Thousand Islands, with numerous small islands scattered along the river.
Getting to Don Khong is not complicated at all. mr.hotsia started at Ban Don Khong, located on the eastern side of the island. It is a lively community and a popular spot where tourists often rent motorcycles to explore the island. Don Khong is perfect for those who enjoy independent travel, allowing you to stop wherever you want and stay as many nights as you choose.
Rent a Motorcycle to Explore Don Khong
At Ban Don Khong, there are several motorcycle rental shops. Prices for Thais and Laotians are about 60,000 kip for manual bikes and 80,000 kip for automatic bikes (approximately 240-320 baht). It’s very affordable because no ID or deposit is required—just pay and ride. I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you visit Don Khong on your own, having a motorcycle will help you fully experience the island’s charm.
An interesting route is riding to “Hua Khong,” where the Mekong River splits into two large channels. Here, you can take a ferry crossing to Champasak town with both people and vehicles, making onward travel very convenient. Additionally, from Hua Khong, you can ride to “Muang Saen,” a small ferry point leading to a tiny island near the Cambodian border.
The Charm of Life and Nature at Don Khong
I had the chance to leisurely ride a motorcycle around Don Khong, admiring the lush green fields and rice paddies scattered across the river plains along the Mekong. Along the way, I stopped to chat with the friendly and open-hearted Lao locals, which made me feel warmly welcomed as if visiting an old friend’s home.
At Hua Khong, where the Mekong splits into two large channels, I saw boats of all sizes crossing back and forth. The atmosphere here is peaceful and very natural. Riding a motorcycle along the Mekong’s riverside gave me a genuine connection to nature and the local way of life.
Visit Li Phi and Khone Phapheng Near Don Khong
For adventure lovers, I, mr.hotsia, recommend using your rented motorcycle to visit “Li Phi” and “Khone Phapheng,” located just over ten kilometers from Don Khong. These spots are among the most beautiful waterfalls and rapids on the Mekong and are important natural attractions not to be missed when traveling in southern Laos.
Riding a motorcycle to these places allows you to experience the true tranquility and nature of southern Laos, which is very different from taking a bus or tour that is rushed and time-limited.
Connecting Travel from Pakse to Don Khong
If you travel from Pakse, the capital of Champasak Province, taking a bus to Don Khong is quite convenient with several routes available. You can also take a ferry at Ban Muang to enter Don Khong. Markets and Food in Don Khong Community
In Ban Don Khong, there is a small but lively market in the mornings and evenings. I tried simple local dishes like hot sticky rice paired with grilled chicken and spicy Lao papaya salad. Although the stalls are small, the flavors pleased a food lover like me. I also had the chance to taste fresh local fruits from nearby gardens, an experience that deeply conveyed the authentic rural Lao lifestyle.
Reflections on Traveling Don Khong with mr.hotsia
Traveling to Don Khong with mr.hotsia is not just about visiting tourist spots but experiencing the simple lifestyle of Lao people deeply connected to the Mekong River. Renting a motorcycle to explore on your own is the best way to capture this experience because you can stop, chat with locals, and take photos of beautiful views that you can’t get from a bus tour.
I encourage everyone to travel here independently and soak in the atmosphere calmly without rushing. The charm of Don Khong lies in its simplicity, nature, and friendly people, which impressed mr.hotsia so much that I want to share it with you.
