Traveling to Wat Phu Temple, Champasak City, Laos by mr.hotsia

If you are looking for a journey full of historical charm and riverside lifestyle along the Mekong River, Wat Phu Temple in Champasak City, Champasak Province, Laos, is a destination that mr.hotsia strongly recommends. This place is not just an ancient ruin but also a gateway to understanding culture and an adventurous, enjoyable travel experience.

Starting the Journey from Pakse to Champasak

Traveling to Wat Phu Temple is easy starting from Pakse, the capital of Champasak Province. Many travelers may have passed through or stayed here before heading to Champasak, which is about 30 kilometers south of Pakse. mr.hotsia suggests that there are several travel options from Pakse to Champasak, each offering unique charm and experiences.

If you come from Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, taking a bus from Ubon to Pakse is straightforward, passing through Chong Mek checkpoint (called Vang Tao checkpoint in Laos), which is convenient and uncomplicated. mr.hotsia has regularly traveled by bus from Ubon to Pakse. Buses run several times daily, especially in the morning and afternoon. During my trips, buses were always full. It is recommended to buy tickets before noon if you plan to travel in the afternoon. Route to Champasak and Crossing the Mekong River

From Pakse, there are several bus lines running south, such as the Don Khong line or other routes passing kilometer marker 30, where Ban Muang is located. This is the ferry pier crossing the Mekong River to Champasak. mr.hotsia once took a bus from Pakse, got off after kilometer 31, then took a motorcycle taxi to Ban Muang pier. The ferry costs about 5,000 kip per person (around 20 baht). If you bring a motorcycle, the fare increases to 10,000 kip. The ferry here is small but offers good and very safe service.

After crossing the Mekong River to the Champasak side, motorcycle taxis are available to take you to accommodations or various points in Champasak City. mr.hotsia recommends staying at Saithong Guesthouse, which is convenient and affordable, within cycling distance to Wat Phu Temple.

Other Interesting Travel Options

For travelers who enjoy challenges and riverside atmosphere, you may choose to take a boat directly from Pakse to Champasak. However, mr.hotsia does not recommend this route because the fare is expensive and there are more safety risks compared to land routes. The new road under construction (latest info from 2010) will be an interesting option in the future, as it will make travel from Chong Mek to Pakse and onward to Champasak faster.

If you drive your own car, the journey is simple. Just drive south from Pakse to Plak 10 junction, then turn right. Continue about 20 kilometers until you reach the turnoff to Ban Muang, where there is a Mekong River ferry pier for cars as well. (Read more about traveling to Champasak atTraveling to Champasak)

Lifestyle and Activities in Champasak

Champasak City is not just a transit point but a town full of interesting Mekong riverside lifestyles. mr.hotsia once went fishing by boat with local villagers along the Mekong River in the early morning, witnessing their simple and warm way of life. Locals here grow kitchen gardens and rely on the Mekong River for fishing. (Read about the Mekong River fishing experience in Champasak atFishing by Mekong River Boat in Champasak)

Additionally, renting a bicycle in Champasak is an activity I highly recommend because Wat Phu Temple is only 6 kilometers from the city. Cycling in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is not strong offers a relaxing atmosphere and close contact with nature. Bicycle rental here costs about 10,000 kip per day (approximately 40 baht).

Visiting Wat Phu Temple, a World Heritage Site in Southern Laos

Wat Phu Temple, also known as Vat Phou by some, is an ancient Khmer archaeological site over a thousand years old, located on a small hill near Champasak City. mr.hotsia advises not to expect just a typical beautiful ruin because Wat Phu has deep history and many fascinating stories, such as being a place of worship for spirits and Hindu gods, including an altar used in past terrifying rituals.

Despite its age and ruins, Wat Phu Temple has its own charm, including the prominent Shiva tower and pathways connecting to Angkor Wat, which is currently being excavated and restored. mr.hotsia recommends visiting in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is mild and photos look great. You can also conveniently rent a bicycle from Champasak City to get there. (Read more about the history and visiting Wat Phu Temple atWat Phu Champasak)

Summary of Expenses and Travel Tips

For those planning to travel from Bangkok to Wat Phu Temple on their own, the approximate expenses are as follows:

  • Bangkok - Ubon Ratchathani bus: about 700 baht
  • Ubon Ratchathani - Pakse bus: about 200 baht
  • Bus from Pakse to Ban Muang pier: 80 baht
  • Mekong River ferry crossing: 20 baht
  • Motorcycle taxi from pier to accommodation: 40 baht

Total about 1,080 baht only, but I guarantee the experience of visiting Champasak and Wat Phu Temple is worth far more than the cost.
