Nightlife in Pakse: Fun by the Mekong River at Night

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to arrive in Pakse, Champasak Province, Laos. On the first day, I carried my backpack and wandered around near the pho and Lao coffee shops, the top spots in this city. By chance, I met a local basketball player who used to play tennis. He saw my tennis racket and we started chatting casually until I got interesting information about the nightlife in this area. His name is “Hua,” a Chinese-Lao mixed heritage, possibly with some Vietnamese blood as well.

Hua helped me explore the most popular beer-drinking hangout spots among Pakse locals, which is the Kham Khong area located along the Mekong River. Along the Mekong and Xe rivers, this area is full of small restaurants and bars with a great atmosphere to chill with the cool breeze coming from the river.

The most popular spot in this area is the “Tan Koo” bar, located by the Mekong River. If you go on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it’s guaranteed to be packed with almost no seats left. Here, Beerlao bottles cost 8,000 kip each, about 32 baht, which is affordable for tourists. Beerlao here is like a cultural icon of Laos because the usual retail price is around 6,500 kip, but in tourist bars, it may rise to 10,000 kip, which is still considered inexpensive.

The atmosphere inside the bar includes beer girls who serve and chat in a friendly manner. There are about 70 beer girls here who come to work by van every night. Before getting off the van, their mobile phones are collected to ensure security and privacy of the work. Around 10 or 11 PM, the van picks them up and returns their phones. This atmosphere shows that Beerlao is not just a drink but a culture with strict standards that must be maintained seriously in this community.

Speaking of Beerlao, I want to update you that recently Beerlao released a new "Beerlao Gold" version priced nearly twice as high at 13,000 kip per bottle. It has a smoother, more delicate taste. I tried it and felt it was more refined, perfect for those who enjoy quality beer. If you come to Laos, try ordering it.

The bar where I drank is a youth spot that plays requested songs, whether Thai, Lao, Chinese, or Vietnamese. The owner is Vietnamese, another ethnic group living in Pakse. Additionally, along the Mekong riverside, there are other bars playing folk-style music and live music. Most visitors prefer sitting by the river because of the nice atmosphere and cool breeze. Some bars even have floating platforms, but they are not many.

Important for nightlife visitors in Pakse is that closing time is around 11 PM. After that, police start checking bars and streets. Although 4-5 years ago roads were closed to traffic, now the atmosphere is much better with only routine checks. All entertainment venues, including the two main Lao clubs in Pakse, close strictly at 11 PM. There are no late-night openings like in Thailand at 1 or 2 AM or places to sit and drink beer or liquor late into the night. So if you want to have fun, plan to go out early and return before closing time.

Nightlife in Pakse is not just about drinking beer but also walking along the Mekong River to observe local life and experience the peaceful yet lively border town atmosphere perfectly.

Connecting to travel and attractions around Pakse

For those planning to visit southern Laos and want to fully experience Pakse’s atmosphere, I recommend traveling from Thailand through the Chong Mek border, as I have described in previous articles.Travel from Ubon to Paksewhich is very convenient and easy. When you arrive in Pakse, don’t forget to visit the Talat Lak 14 market, a large market with plenty of fresh fish from the Mekong River. Or if you want to experience nature and beautiful waterfalls, I recommend visitingPaksongwhich is about 50 kilometers from Pakse. It is the coffee capital of Laos and has many famous waterfalls to choose from.

Also, if you have more time, visiting Champasak and the Wat Phu temple ruins, a World Heritage Site, is another highlight not to be missed. Read more details atTraveling to Wat Phu TempleandWat Phu Champasakto plan your complete trip.

Closing with atmosphere and memories

On a night in Pakse, I, mr.hotsia, stopped drinking around 11 PM because I had many tasks the next day and planned to play basketball with Hua at the Pakse city sports stadium, an activity I hadn’t done for a long time. Experiencing nightlife here made me feel the simplicity yet full of friendship and sincerity of people in this small town by the Mekong River.

If you want a unique new experience, I recommend walking, chilling, and drinking Beerlao like the locals do. You will realize that Pakse’s nightlife is not just quiet but has its own charm and warmth.
