Dao Rueang Market, Pakse: A morning market full of stories and real life

When talking about the largest and most vibrant morning market in Pakse city, Champasak Province, Laos, the nameDao Rueang Marketwill immediately come to mind. If anyone wonders why the market is named this way, I must say that “Dao Rueang” is not just a flower name but the name of a woman whom I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to know and follow her life story closely.

Ms. Dao Rueang started her life with hardship, working coffee picking since childhood. One day, she managed to build her life and became the owner of this Dao Rueang Market, including a hotel and a wine shop at the Chong Mak checkpoint. Her story is not only an inspiration but also the beginning of this large morning market where I have walked and experienced myself.

Walking through Dao Rueang Market: A morning market full of colors and freshness

I, mr.hotsia, woke up before 6:00 AM to experience the atmosphere of Dao Rueang Market. I must say this market is large and offers a wider variety of goods than anywhere else in Laos, from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and seafood caught from the Mekong River in the early morning. I walked around taking photos and recording clips of every market zone to show the diversity of products (the video will be shared soon on my YouTube channel).

What I like most is the freshness of the ingredients here. Vegetables and fruits are all fresh from local farms, including fish that villagers bring to sell early in the morning. If lucky, you will see large Mekong fish just caught from the river. Dao Rueang Market is located near the Mekong Riverbank. If you walk right from the market toward the river, you will find a small pier where villagers return from fishing. It is a warm and lively scene that I, mr.hotsia, truly appreciate.

Breakfast at Dao Rueang Market: Affordable food with authentic local flavors

For travelers visiting Laos or even Pakse locals, Dao Rueang Market is a great starting point for breakfast. There are many local and made-to-order food stalls lined up to choose from, including pho, rice porridge, sticky rice with spicy papaya salad. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying stalls that look clean and popular among locals because you will get authentic flavors at cheaper prices than outside restaurants.

Most food stalls in the market have an open-air atmosphere where people chat lively, giving a feeling of truly being part of the Pakse community. This is an experience I, mr.hotsia, find impressive and want everyone to experience firsthand.

Why Pakse is interesting: Connecting to other attractions in Champasak

Pakse is not just a passing-through town. It is the capital of Champasak Province and serves as a gateway to many natural and cultural attractions, such as Wat Phu Temple, a World Heritage site not far from the city center (read more atTraveling to Wat Phu Temple). Or you can drive up to Pak Song, the coffee capital of Laos, which has a cool climate and beautiful waterfalls to visit as well (Traveling to Pak Song, Pakse, Champasak Province)

For those who enjoy the Mekong River atmosphere and riverside life, I, mr.hotsia, have gone fishing by boat with Champasak villagers. The early morning atmosphere by the Mekong is peaceful and full of stories of villagers making a living from fishing (read my experience atFishing trip on the Mekong River in Champasak)

Getting to Dao Rueang Market and Pakse

For those traveling from Thailand like me, mr.hotsia, arriving in Pakse is not difficult, especially from Ubon Ratchathani. There are several daily bus services available, convenient and fast (see more details atPakse Bus Station, Ubon). Then you can take a tuk-tuk directly to Dao Rueang Market or if you want to stroll around Pakse city first, there are many accommodations and restaurants to choose from.

Dao Rueang Market is not just an ordinary morning market but a gateway to deeply learning about the southern Lao way of life. I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone to visit at least once if you have the chance to come to Pakse.
