Bueng Kan Rice Noodle Soup: The Flavor of a Small Mekong Riverside Town You Shouldn't Miss
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia, sharing my food and travel experience in Bueng Kan Province, a small province located on the Thai side of the Mekong River, opposite Pakxan town, Bolikhamxay Province, Laos. This province recently separated from Nong Khai, but when it comes to food and lifestyle, Bueng Kan is more charming than you might think, especially the classic breakfast dishBueng Kan Rice Noodle Soupwhich I have tasted and want to recommend to everyone visiting here.
In Bueng Kan town, there aren't many breakfast restaurants, but the rice noodle soup place I stopped at is truly a local favorite. I asked locals what they recommend for breakfast, and the answer was “rice noodle soup.” The restaurant I visited is opposite Samanmitr Hotel, an old establishment opening early in the morning. By late morning, the rice noodle soup is usually sold out, and there is always a long queue.
Many might be familiar with the term “khao piak” from Vientiane or the rice porridge made from ground cooked rice, but in Bueng Kan, the “khao piak” they make isrice noodle soup with noodlessimilar to guay jap noodles. The rice noodles here are freshly made daily, soft, fragrant, and uniquely distinctive because Bueng Kan Province lies opposite Pakxan town in Bolikhamxay Province, Laos, resulting in a harmonious blend of food cultures.
The charm of Bueng Kan rice noodle soup lies in its rich pork bone broth, so flavorful that I had to give it a thumbs up. This broth is poured over the soft rice noodles along with accompaniments like pork blood cubes, meatballs, and minced pork, similar to our guay jap, but with a mellow taste and fragrant spices unique to Bueng Kan locals. While eating, I thought this place must have been around for a long time because I saw locals coming almost daily. If you visitBueng Kan Provinceyou definitely cannot skip this restaurant.
Alternative Breakfast and Health Drink Shops
Besides rice noodle soup, locals in Bueng Kan also have another breakfast spot I heard of but didn’t get to try: “Bueng Kan Pan-Fried Egg Set,” which serves a pan-fried egg set with bread at a light price of only 50 baht. I saw happy customers inside, so the taste must be special too, but I’m not very fond of this kind of breakfast, so I missed trying it.
After recharging in the morning, I recommend stopping byBan Rak Sukkapap (House of Health)located opposite Samranmitr Hotel. This small shop is run by two lovely and friendly Bueng Kan ladies. They focus on health drinks such as freshly blended herbal juices and various fruit juices popular among locals. This shop is newly opened but quickly became famous. I took the opportunity to ask the owners detailed travel information about Bueng Kan Province. It’s a great source for those wanting to know more about this town.
Lunch with Ja Phanom’s Wichian Buri Grilled Chicken Recipe
For lunch, I invite you to tryJa Phanom’s Wichian Buri Grilled Chicken Recipeat a small restaurant in Bueng Kan town. This place is packed at noon because the grilled chicken and papaya salad have a distinctive, spicy flavor unlike anywhere else. The Wichian Buri grilled chicken I had in Wichian Buri itself was not quite the same. Here in Bueng Kan, they have their own beloved recipe. I enjoyed spicy papaya salad with crispy grilled chicken skin and hot sticky rice, so delicious I lost track of time.
Afternoon Snacks and Drinks in Bueng Kan Town
After a satisfying lunch, I went cycling around Bueng Kan town. It’s easy to get around with simple roads, perfect for cycling and stopping at various coffee shops.
One of my favorite coffee shops isMae Jo Coffeean old-style coffee shop famous for both coffee and khanom thuai (Thai coconut milk custard). The khanom thuai here tastes so good I bought several sets to take home. Besides the taste, the special thing about this shop is the atmosphere that allows friendly conversations with Bueng Kan locals. I rested here after cycling and exchanged stories about local life. It was a very heartwarming moment.
If you prefer a nice air-conditioned place, I recommendMukda Bakerylocated near the morning market. This shop serves Nescafe coffee, cakes, and various pastries. The long Bauhinia tree in front adds a beautiful and unique atmosphere, perfect for chilling with a cup of coffee while watching people stroll through the market. Locals told me this is a must-try place when visiting here.
Dinner by the Mekong with Delicious Korean BBQ
In the evening, I chose to dine by the Mekong River near Maenam Hotel. There are many types of restaurants here. For me,Jane Korean BBQis the best dinner spot. It’s an affordable Korean BBQ buffet at only 99 baht per person (129 baht if dining alone). Bueng Kan locals flock here in the evening because it’s delicious and great value. I grilled meat dipped in sauce while enjoying the beautiful Mekong River view—very relaxing.
After dinner, I strolled along the Mekong to the opposite Pakxan side in Laos, observing the connected lifestyles on both riverbanks. Traveling in Bueng Kan isn’t just about climbing Phu Tok or enjoying nature; it also includes experiencing daily life and the unique local flavors.
