Jedsee Waterfall, a hidden natural beauty in Bolikhamxay Province, Laos
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel across the border to Bolikhamxay Province, Laos, to explore Jedsee Waterfall, a waterfall famous for its colors that change with the sunlight. Just the name sounds exciting, doesn't it?
Jedsee Waterfall is not far from the Thai-Lao border, located close to Bueng Kan Province on the Thai side. For those who have been toPhu Thok Templein Seka District, Bueng Kan Province, you will see that traveling to Jedsee Waterfall feels like a continuous circular trip from Phu Thok. If you drive from Phu Thok along Highway 2013 heading south, you will find a left turn that conveniently leads to Jedsee Waterfall.
However, I must say that Jedsee Waterfall is not just about walking down to take pictures at the lower tier and stopping there. The true beauty lies at the top tier of the waterfall, which requires hiking several kilometers. The trail is quite challenging and you need to be physically prepared. I, mr.hotsia, only managed to reach the lowest tier, but I could still feel the natural energy and the refreshingly cool atmosphere beyond description.
Why is it called Jedsee Waterfall?
This waterfall is famous because when the water falls and hits the sunlight at different angles, it reflects a seven-color rainbow: violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. These beautiful colors are like a unique natural painting, a rare characteristic not commonly found in other waterfalls.
The surroundings of Jedsee Waterfall are part of Phu Wua National Park, rich with forests and wildlife. Each trip here feels like an escape from the busy city life to breathe fresh air and enjoy genuine natural views.
Travel Experience and Local Lifestyle
To visit Jedsee Waterfall, it is recommended to have a private car or hire a vehicle because public transportation is still inconvenient, especially if you want a complete trip from Phu Thok to Jedsee Waterfall and then to Bueng Khong Long. This area offers beautiful and well-connected travel routes.
Along the way, you will pass Lao villages that maintain a simple way of life, old wooden houses, and local markets offering native foods to try, such as sticky rice, grilled pork, and spicy Lao papaya salad. I, mr.hotsia, have stopped to taste these and was very impressed. This atmosphere makes the trip not just about seeing the waterfall but also experiencing the real life of the locals.
Bueng Kan Province and Bolikhamxay Province: The Connection Across the Mekong
For those who enjoy visiting riverside towns, Bueng Kan Province on the Thai side and Bolikhamxay Province on the Lao side are very interesting areas. Both sides share similar cultures and lifestyles but have slightly different charms, asI have described in my article about traveling in Bueng Kan Province. You will see that Bueng Kan is a new province separated from Nong Khai, with a Thai-Lao market to stroll and shop, and a convenient border crossing to Pakxan, Bolikhamxay Province.
If you like walking through community markets, tasting local food, and observing the lifestyles of people on both sides of the Mekong, I recommend stopping by the Bueng Kan Thai-Lao market, bustling with forest products and unique items from Laos. This is another experience I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy because it shows the close blend and relationship between the two countries.
Travel Tips
If you plan to visit Jedsee Waterfall, prepare yourself physically because the hike to the top tier is quite long and steep. Comfortable sneakers and breathable clothing are essential, along with carrying drinking water and snacks, as there are few shops or service points around the waterfall.
Also, plan your trip well, such as starting early in the morning to have enough time to reach the top tier without rushing back in the evening. The weather in Bolikhamxay Province is quite hot and humid. During the rainy season, the waterfall is beautiful and has more water but the trail becomes slippery and more dangerous.
