Vientiane Morning Market: Experience the morning life by the Mekong in the capital of Laos

For me, mr.hotsia, my many trips to Vientiane often revolve around main tourist spots like Pha That Luang, Ho Phra Keo, or strolling along the Mekong River in the evening. But the Vientiane Morning Market was a place I had never visited until recently.

The Vientiane Morning Market is located next to the Kad Chao shopping mall and near the bus stop from the Mekong River Bridge, making it very convenient to get here. Whether you come from Kam Khong or other parts of the city, it’s easy to walk here. For Thai and Lao speakers who can still communicate, I recommend asking locals for directions. This market has both open-air and indoor sections mixed together. I saw various vendors displaying goods on the ground, some with tables and chairs for immediate dining.

The aroma of Lao-style breakfast greeted me as soon as I stepped into the market. I decided to try Lao coffee with salt, a unique and charming flavor unlike any coffee I had tasted at True Coffee Vientiane or other cafes in the city. I also sampled Khao Pla Mieng, a traditional local breakfast dish that is not easy to find. The simply prepared but flavorful fish dish made me feel I was truly experiencing Lao life.

For me, walking through the Vientiane Morning Market was not just about buying food or goods but about witnessing the real lifestyle of the locals—from the friendly vendors setting up their stalls to the people shopping in a lively yet not chaotic atmosphere unlike morning markets in big cities.

Connecting with the city’s atmosphere and riverside lifestyle

After exploring the market to my satisfaction, I chose to walk back to my accommodation near Kam Khong, a popular area for tourists seeking peaceful rest but still close to major attractions in Vientiane. Walking along the Mekong River to the morning market allowed me to see people on the riverbank preparing to start their day as the warm sun began to shine. The simple yet vibrant atmosphere was truly impressive.

Vientiane, the capital city that many may see as busy and modern, but this morning market is another charm that helped me understand Laos more deeply, combined with fond memories from previous visits.VientianeAs I wrote before, strolling along the Mekong River at sunset with views of the large, bright red sun low over the river, and sipping iced coffee at True Coffee, a city meeting point.

Flavors and curiosities at the morning market

Besides Khao Pla Mieng and salted Lao coffee I mentioned, there are many other foods worth trying, such as Khao Piak Vientiane, a rice porridge with pork offal, minced pork, scallions, and coriander, which I have recommended in previous articles.Khao Piak VientianeThere are also other local dishes you might not have seen, like Vientiane crispy chicken or unusual snacks sold at affordable prices.

I browsed fresh produce ranging from vegetables and fruits to seafood and meats. The simple yet clean presentation made me feel this is real life, not just staged for tourism.

Vientiane Morning Market: The start of a new day

The Vientiane Morning Market is not just an ordinary market for me, mr.hotsia, but an experience that deepens my connection with this city. Every time I come to Vientiane, I think of this lively market filled with authentic local flavors.

If you are planning to visit Vientiane, don’t forget to set aside a morning to stroll through this market. I guarantee you will experience the sincerity and charm of the Lao people and taste breakfast dishes not easily found elsewhere.
