Wat Sisaket Vientiane: An ancient temple that survived the war and stories from mr.hotsia

If you have a chance to visitVientianethe capital city of Laos, besides the well-known Pha That Luang and Haw Phra Kaew, one temple I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend you to experience isWat Sisaketsometimes spelled “Sisaket.” This temple is unique compared to others in Vientiane and importantly, it is the only temple that was not destroyed during the war. This is considered fortunate and a twist of fate that has allowed the temple to retain its original beauty and charm to this day.

I strolled around Wat Sisaket in the late afternoon. The setting sun cast a warm and charming glow on the temple walls. What made me stop and keep taking photos was the Buddha statues carved on the temple walls. They are not placed inside a vihara or ubosot but are magnificently and gracefully lined up along the surrounding walls. I have never seen such a design before. It reminded me a bit of the temple in Sangkhlaburi, Thailand, with its pagoda in the middle of the water.

These Buddha statues are small principal Buddhas arranged in a long row along the temple walls. Each statue is intricately carved and still brightly colored despite being hundreds of years old. This spot has become an iconic photo corner that tourists and locals alike must capture as a memory. I, mr.hotsia, also took many shots from various angles. The best time for photos is in the morning or late afternoon when sunlight brings these statues to life.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere Around Wat Sisaket

Wat Sisaket is not just a sacred place but also a community center for a small neighborhood around Vientiane that still lives simply. I saw children in school uniforms walking past the temple in the morning, street vendors nearby, and monks collecting alms on a cool Sunday morning.

Compared to the modern and bustling atmosphere of Vientiane city, Wat Sisaket offers an incredible sense of stepping back in time and peaceful quietness. It is an ideal place for those seeking rest or tranquility from tiring travels.
