Phu Fa Peak, Phongsaly: A viewpoint and travel experience that mr.hotsia must share
Phongsaly is a small town located in northern Laos, a district that remarkably preserves its traditional beauty. When it comes to landmarks that impressed me, mr.hotsia, I cannot forget “Phu Fa Peak” or Phufa hill, the highest peak towering near Phongsaly town. This place is not just an ordinary viewpoint but a gateway to tranquility and the simple rural lifestyle of the local people.
On the day I arrived in Phongsaly, I started by exploring the small town with its peaceful atmosphere and walked to the Phongsaly bus station (Phongsaly Bus Station), which is the travel connection point to Khua town and other towns in Phongsaly district. I bought a ticket to Phu Fa Peak from the staff there. They provided a trail map and recommended starting early in the morning to fully experience the atmosphere.
Climbing Phu Fa Peak: More than just hiking, it's experiencing life
The trail up Phu Fa Peak is not too difficult for general travelers, but what impressed me was seeing the lifestyle of the Phongsaly people living around the mountain. The birdsong and the breeze through the tall trees made me feel liberated from the outside chaos.
At the summit of Phu Fa, I found the striking white Phu Fa stupa, a revered site for locals. Although the Phongsaly people themselves do not often come here except during merit-making events or festivals, that day I saw quite a number of tourists, both Lao and foreigners, visiting to enjoy the panoramic view of Phongsaly town from above.
The view from Phu Fa Peak stretches far, overlooking the entire Phongsaly town, rice fields, and surrounding mountains clearly. The morning atmosphere with light mist floating around is an image I will remember for a long time.
Walking through ethnic villages: An unmissable experience
After resting and making merit at the stupa, I chose to descend via another route, a circular trail around Phu Fa Peak. This path passes through various ethnic villages of Phongsaly such as the Lao Sung, Akha, Hmong, and Yao. It takes about two to three hours to walk and experience the local lifestyle.
Along the way, I talked with very friendly locals. Some families invited me to try local food and shared stories about the history of each ethnic group attentively. Seeing traditional bamboo wooden houses and rice fields still worked by hand made me understand that Phongsaly remains a peaceful and authentic land.

Staying in a small town like Phongsaly gave me ample time to fully experience local life, whether it was the morning market with local food to try or walking around the hill tribe villages surrounding the town.
Evening atmosphere and dinner with Grandpa Phu Fa
Another deep memory for me was visiting Grandpa Phu Fa's house near the path to Phu Fa stupa. One evening, I walked to Grandpa and Grandma's house to share dinner together (Having dinner with Grandpa Phu Fa)
Grandpa and Grandma are Chinese-Ho people who speak some Lao. Their small house was full of warmth and simplicity. Grandma cooked local dishes for me, such as fried pork and local vegetables. I also tried making fried egg dipped in sticky rice in my own style that I had done in Khua town (Fried egg dipped in sticky rice)
That moment made me realize that traveling is not just about seeing beautiful views but truly experiencing the life and heart of the people there.
