Songkran Rocket Festival in Oudomxay: A Dual-Province Songkran Experience with mr.hotsia

During one Songkran, I traveled to Luang Prabang in Laos. Traveling between provinces gave me a special experience rarely told, which was to experiencethe Songkran Rocket Festival in Oudomxayor what the Lao call "Muang Xai," located in Oudomxay Province. Besides enjoying Luang Prabang's Songkran, I fully joined in the local traditions here.

Oudomxay is a central town in northern Laos, important as a hub connecting provinces like Luang Prabang, Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, and Muang Khua. This makes it a convenient stopover and transfer point. On this trip, I stayed and experienced Songkran here before continuing to Muang Khua, heading towards Dien Bien Phu and Sapa in Vietnam.

Songkran Rocket Festival Atmosphere in Muang Xai

Songkran in Muang Xai is special because of the parade ofrocket fireworksor gunpowder rockets launched into the sky to pray for rain and good fortune. I saw this rocket parade passing through lush green rice fields, accompanied by music and singing, creating a joyful and friendly atmosphere from the locals.

The parade featuresNang Sang Khanthe representative beauty queen of Muang Xai, walking gracefully in the procession. People on the streets also enjoy water splashing during Songkran just like back home. Water play and pouring water to pay respect to elders are clear customs, especially when the rocket parade passes by. The atmosphere is filled with laughter and friendship.

Exploring Oudomxay with mr.hotsia

Muang Xai has a simple charm but is full of life. I started the day by walking through theOudomxay Marketa fresh market full of fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local food sold by villagers from early morning. Walking through this morning market made me feel like I was truly experiencing the lifestyle of the Oudomxay people.

The Muang Xai bus station is also important for northern Laos travel. Located in the town center, it is within walking distance from my hotel.Oudomxay Bus Stationis a central hub for many bus routes going to cities like Luang Prabang, Pakbeng, Muang Khua, and even crossing into China. There are also VIP buses to Vientiane. Traveling here is convenient and quite complete for travelers like me.

Continuing Travel from Oudomxay to Muang Khua

After enjoying the Songkran atmosphere and exploring Muang Xai, I continued to Muang Khua by bus departing daily at 8:30 AM. The approximately 3-hour journey passes through forests and rice fields. The scenery on both sides is beautiful and peaceful. This trip reminded me of the simplicity and beauty of northern Laos, which is not widely talked about.
