Mekong River Cruise Laos 4/9: Kensala in the Heart of Ban Tha Suang Forest, Muang Hongsa, Laos
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the opportunity to cruise past “Kensala,” a deep destination in the Ban Tha Suang forest, Muang Hongsa, Laos. This was one of the most special experiences, rare to find, from my many Mekong river cruises in Laos.
If you have followedMekong River Cruise Laos 1/9: Journey to Ban Tha Suang, Muang HongsaorMekong River Trip Laos 3: Fishing for Large Fish with Nets in Laosbefore, you would know that traveling deep into Muang Hongsa is not easy. But the deeper you go, the more you discover the beauty of nature and the authentic traditional lifestyle of the local people.
Journey to Kensala
For this trip, I departed from the ferry pier in downtown Muang Hongsa and cruised along the vast and peaceful Mekong River until reaching the point where the river branches into small canals surrounded by dense tropical forest. The houses of Ban Tha Suang villagers are hidden within the lush greenery. It is clear that life here remains simple and deeply connected to nature.
Kensala is not just a viewpoint or a typical tourist spot; it is the center of the lifestyle and beliefs of the Tha Suang community. There is a small local shrine in the middle of the forest, used by villagers for various rituals and as a meeting point for locals in the area.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle of Tha Suang
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to talk with many villagers living simple lives—farming, growing rice, raising fish, and foraging in the surrounding ecosystem. Everything seems to move slowly but warmly with smiles and friendliness.
The Tha Suang market I visited earlierA rustic market deep in the forest by the Mekong Riverremains a gathering place for local products including fresh vegetables, wild fruits, and freshly made local dishes. The “Lao papaya salad” with its spicy flavor eaten with hot sticky rice reminded me of the simple yet flavorful true taste of Laos.
Authentic Lao Food and Experiences
Some may say Lao food is simple, but for mr.hotsia, tasting the “grilled chicken” marinated with fresh local spices from Ban Tha Suang villagers or the “Lao papaya salad” made with fresh chili, lime, and rich fermented fish sauce is a small joy not found in ordinary restaurants.

Reflections After Cruising to Kensala
I, mr.hotsia, admit that experiencing Kensala in the heart of Ban Tha Suang forest made me deeply understand the richness of nature and the human bond with the environment. There is no hustle, no city lights, only bird songs, flowing water, and the breeze through tall trees.
If you are a traveler who loves tranquility and wants to experience traditional Lao community life without interference from modern tourism trends, I recommend cruising this Mekong River route and stopping at Kensala, Ban Tha Suang. You will realize that true travel happiness is spending slow time with nature and people here.
