The boat is not made from bombs. When asking locals, it turns out the boat is made from airplane fuel tanks dropped during bombing in the 1960s war. Here's the story by mr.hotsia

As a former soldier, I can explain. When dropping bombs, once the fuel in the tank runs out, they detach it to reduce the plane's weight, save fuel, fly faster, and be safer by making the target smaller. If the tank lands undamaged on trees or water, locals cut it in half to make a bomb boat. Nowadays, they call it a steel boat. There are dozens of these boats, frequently used by foreign tourists. When I returned from Vietnam, I passed Nam Phlao checkpoint.
Then I crossed this bridge, but at that time I didn't know there were bomb boats here. At Thaback Pier, 14 km from Ban Nahin towards Khamsavanh, there is a bridge over the Nam Theun River. In the past, there was no road crossing the river, so transportation was inconvenient. Locals used these bomb boats to travel because they are light, fast, and very durable. Previously, these boats sold for 60,000 baht each, but now with more roads, they sell for 20,000-30,000 baht.
Service fees depend on the travel distance. You can contact the local elder, Ken Sing, at 2116488 (Lao mobile +856 2116488). To get there, enter via Pakxan or Thakhek, then take a vehicle towards Khamsavanh before continuing another 60+ km to Ban Thaback. If you want a new experience, try riding the bomb boat once. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Thakhek city for convenient travel.
