The main city is Tha Khaek, located opposite Nakhon Phanom Province. It is the site of the 3rd Mekong River bridge between Thailand and Laos. Most attractions in Khammouane are caves, with the world-famous Kong Lor Cave.
Kong Lor Cave is very large, stretching 7 kilometers. Khammouane also has newly discovered attractions like Pa Pha Cave or Buddha Cave, located on a high cliff with hundreds of ancient Buddha statues made of gold, silver, and wood mixed together. Other caves include Chiang Rieb Cave, Nang Aen Cave, and Phra In Cave. In Tha Khaek city, there is also a giant ancient wall made of stone that no one could have built. Locals say it was built by giants from the dinosaur era. The giant wall is sure to become famous in the future, but no one knows its origin.
What is certain is that it is a strange and incredible tourist attraction. Learn more here. Another little-known attraction is the Exploding Boat, located in Borikhamsai Province but near Khammouane, sharing the same travel route. Not only caves are interesting; Bualapha, a former war town, still has tanks parked in people's yards and war vehicles. Few people visit this town because it is far away.
This is what I heard from locals. One day I will definitely visit. Mr.Hotsia spent several days in Khammouane Province, staying at Ban Nahin and Tha Khaek. I was impressed by the night view of Nakhon Phanom Province seen from Tha Khaek because it is beautiful with temples lit up nicely. There is no curfew in Tha Khaek. When traveling to southern Laos, Pakse city requires returning before 11 PM. Savannakhet has a curfew for nightlife, but Tha Khaek does not, although shops close at midnight.
The accommodation I recommend is Tha Khaek Tailor Lodge, which Lonely Planet praises as a nice place to stay. Rooms start from 200 baht. Many foreigners stay here. Motorbikes are available for rent. They provide maps for touring just like I did. You can see all attractions in one day by following my route: Nang Aen Cave, Chiang Liap, Tha Farang, Buddha Cave, and finish at the giant wall. Khammouane Province is worth visiting. It features many uniquely shaped limestone mountains. Just driving through the surrounding limestone ranges is worthwhile. Enjoy your trip!
