Tham Pha Pa or the cave with fish and cliffs was traditionally called Fish Cliff Cave by the Lao people. When ancient Buddha statues were found here, it also became known as New Buddha Cave. Travel guides refer to it as Tham Pha Pa (Buddha Cave). This cave was discovered by accident while climbing to find bats.

This cave has no entrance path; it is a vertical shaft in a high cliff. Inside are over two hundred Buddha statues, including 16 made of real gold, the rest silver and wood. Photography and video recording inside the cave are prohibited; only outside photos are allowed. I purchased a CD with detailed video footage and have permission to share it on YouTube for clear and thorough information. Below you can watch it. I also took photos of the cave surroundings and the journey (see the Tham Pha Pa travel map). The Lao people highly revere the Buddhas in this cave.
When the cave was newly discovered, there was no entrance; visitors had to climb bamboo ladders and trek through mud to reach it, yet many still came. Recently, both Thai and foreign tourists visit daily. The cave is located 5 kilometers east of Thakhek city, then turn left for another 8 kilometers. The road is good, and a motorbike ride gets you there quickly. The video information is very detailed, please check it out. mr.hotsia January 2011. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Thakhek city for convenient travel. Fish Cliff Cave or New Buddha Cave.
