Recommended Hotels in Luang Prabang Support exciting travel by booking hotels here "I Love Muang Ngoi" or Upper Muang Ngoi, a town with no road access, reachable only by boat. This isolation cuts off Upper Muang Ngoi from main road connections. Surrounded by limestone mountains, this town is a paradise to relax for a night or two before continuing your journey elsewhere. Today, Muang Ngoi is not as peaceful as when it first became popular.

Muang Ngoi is full of construction, including restaurants and guesthouses. Looking towards the pier, it is crowded with eateries and accommodations, each trying to offer the best view. The restaurant pillars are taller than usual, but the view from those spots is beautiful. Upper Muang Ngoi is a peaceful dream town for foreigners; some plan to stay two days but end up staying weeks. The town has generator-powered electricity from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Thai Baht is accepted here as well as in all cities across Laos. Guesthouses offer dollar exchange services but with less favorable rates. In Muang Ngoi, you will see advertisements for trekking tours, fishing, and kayaking. Trekking prices range from about 200-400 Baht per day depending on the destination. Lonely Planet recommends a quality tour company called Lao Youth Travel (http://www.laoyouthtravel.com).

Located on the left side of the boat pier, the tour company is about 300 meters behind on the main road heading south. Trekking tours here cost about 320 Baht per person, including meals, to visit Hmong villages. Foreign tourists in Muang Ngoi often hike to caves. As Thai visitors, we can also explore the caves ourselves. From the pier, walk up to the main road, then turn right (south). Near the end of the road, ask locals for directions.

As Thai travelers, it's easier for us to communicate with Lao people. The water cave features beautiful crystal formations (about a 5 km walk). Nescafe glass but with Lao coffee, Lao military hats bought at Phongsali with Muang Ngoi views. Besides cave trekking, you can continue to visit Khmu villages Huay Bo, Huay Sen, and Ban Na, or change the atmosphere by staying in guesthouses nearby for about 40 Baht per night. Muang Ngoi has three temples: Wat Nuea, Wat Tai, and Wat Klang.

The monk I gave sticky rice alms to this morning was from Wat Nuea. Wat Nuea is not far from the pier and can be reached by a short walk. These three temples are centuries old. During the Indochina War, they were damaged but have since been restored. Muang Ngoi has dozens of guesthouses with average prices below 100 Baht inside the town, not at the pier. For food, Thai visitors will find it easy with pho and made-to-order dishes at some restaurants.

I have yet to visit two other towns: Nam Bak and Pak Mang. Next time, I plan to stay in these towns not just for one night but for a long time, considering accommodation costs about 60 Baht per night or 1,800 Baht per month with free water and electricity. Living like this is much better than renting a house in Bangkok. ...Mr.Hotsia mr.hotsia Recommended hotels in Luang Prabang Local boats traveling on the Ou River Muang Ngoi Boats at Muang Ngoi Pier Sandbanks in the middle of the Ou River at Muang Ngoi Muang Ngoi Pier in the morning

Not as tasty as the omelet at Ban Na. Good view but blocked by pillars. If you pass by the event, not sure if the owner uses the pillars to hang lanterns or will remove them. Follow my journey from Muang Ngoi to Nong Khieo, Luang Prabang, Xieng Khouang, Sam Neua... Sticky rice soaked in Ou River water for ten nights before making white rice whisky. Fishing traps in Ou River front, catching too many shrimp to eat. I am heading to Nong Khieo now. Lovely kids in Muang Ngoi :)
