Buying bus tickets from shops in town or guesthouses where you stay is more convenient than renting a car to buy tickets and catch the bus because the prices are not much different and the bus will pick you up at your accommodation. Regarding the road from Luang Prabang to Huay Sai, the first section from Luang Prabang to Pak Mong, Udomchai, the road is not good or just moderately bad. After that, from Udomchai to Luang Namtha and then to Bokeo, the road is good. However, I do not recommend this route for sleeper buses because the bus takes curves very fast.
The ride is rough; passengers almost fell off the sleeper seats. It’s hard to sleep well. But as the road improves, drivers may understand that passengers need to sleep better.
