Phra That Phou Si was built during the reign of King Anuruth around 1794 AD. The stupa is located at the highest peak of Phou Si, 150 meters above sea level.
This stupa can be seen from almost every corner of Luang Prabang. The stupa is shaped like a square lotus flower painted gold, standing on a square base topped with a seven-tiered golden bronze umbrella. The best time to see the stupa is in the late afternoon when the sunlight makes it glow golden. Around the stupa, there is a walkway to enjoy views of Luang Prabang city. To the northeast, you can see the airport, and to the west, the Mekong River.
The winding path between the petals of the hill and from the summit, you can see the old Royal Palace by the Mekong River. Phra That Chom Poo Si is not the only structure on the hilltop; there are several Buddhist sites such as Wat Tham Phou Si, Wat Pa Kae, Wat Si Phutthabat, and Wat Pa Ruak.
