Traveling from Pakse, Pak Song to Kontum, Vietnam http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Pakse Champasak > Journey from Pakse, Pak Song to Kontum, Vietnam Traveling to Vietnam nowadays is very easy. The Vietnam I refer to is Central Vietnam, the city of Kontum (Kon Tum), because now there are more than one Vietnamese company offering routes from Pakse to Gia Lai city. The bus starts from Pakse, passing Pak Song, Tha Tang, Sekong.

Attapeu then passes the Nakeo border checkpoint, called Bo-Y on the Vietnamese side, then passes Ngoc Hoi town to Kontum province and ends at Gia Lai province using the same bus without transfers. The service I used is by Mailinh company, a Vietnamese-Thai bus service. I boarded at Pak Song and got off at Kontum, very convenient. Lunch is served on the way with a Vietnamese-style table, offering plenty of food.

Just the meal alone is worth it. The bus fare from Pak Song to Kontum is about 400 baht per person. You can see the fare in dong and kip in the table below. When I inquired in Kontum city, other companies also offer bus services from Kontum to Pakse, but if you get off at Sekong, you have to pay the full fare as if getting off at Pakse, so I didn’t try other buses. Having this bus service is very convenient because if you start traveling from Bangkok and stay overnight in Ubon.

In the morning, then arrive in Pakse around noon, stroll around Pakse, rest and explore for a night, then the next morning take the bus to Kontum, Vietnam arriving in the evening. Stay in Kontum for about two nights. This means leaving Bangkok on Friday night and arriving in Vietnam late Saturday afternoon for just over a thousand baht total fare. Soon, this route will likely attract many more travelers. Mr.hotsia arrived in Kontum in the evening; on the bus, I was the only Thai, the rest were mostly Vietnamese with one foreigner.

Upon arrival, the foreigner and I looked for accommodation together, following Lonely Planet recommendations. The transport from Kontum to the market is about 4 kilometers (I actually took a motorbike back for just 30 baht). There are many accommodations nearby, priced at 240 baht per night, cheap and good with good air conditioning. Besides cheap lodging, food in Kontum is also inexpensive. Mr.hotsia, December 2010. It would be very convenient if there were direct bus services from Thailand to Vietnam, possibly routes like Ubon to Kontum, Ubon to Gia Lai, or Ubon to Danang, Ubon to Ho Chi Minh City.

Or if there were buses from Bangkok to major Vietnamese cities such as Hanoi, Hue, Danang, Hoi An, it would be more convenient for travel and communication. I guess I have to wait for that day; I wonder if I will see it in my lifetime :) *** Mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Pak Song. Bus from Pak Song to Kontum, Vietnam.
