Traveling from Ubon to Pakse http://www.hotsia.com > Travel to Pakse Champasak. Actually, I wasn’t going to write this because the trip is quite straightforward, but there are many things people might not know, so I have to write a bit. If you have a passport, you can travel to Laos without a VISA and stay for 30 days (Traveling in Laos). Once you have your passport, you can buy a ticket at the Ubon Bus Terminal. The fare is 200 Baht per person.

Tickets are sold day by day only. The first bus departs at 9:30 AM, and ticket sales open at 8:10 AM. When buying a ticket, the staff will assign your seat number. The bus runs continuously. If you come in the morning, sit on the left side to avoid the heat. Try asking for it; I came without knowing and was hot for several hours, and importantly, I didn’t take any photos. Another bus leaves around 3 PM and goes directly to the Pakse Bus Terminal. After arriving in Pakse, you need to take a tuk-tuk for 50 Baht per person to the accommodation area. The border crossing on the Laos side is called "Dan Wang Tao."
Everyone must get off the bus to get exit stamps from Thailand and entry stamps into Laos. The Thai and Laos border checkpoints are very close; you can walk between them following others. It is recommended to get entry/exit cards for both Thailand and Laos filled out on the bus to avoid rushing at the border. A caution: if you get off at the Laos bus terminal, take a shared minibus into town. Shared minibuses wait for several passengers to gather, which is cheaper than taking a single tuk-tuk.
If you have no other choice, you must take a tuk-tuk, but the first price they quote is 200 Baht—don’t accept that. 50 Baht is enough for a tuk-tuk. Shared minibuses are even cheaper. Also, if you only want to visit the Chong Mek border, take a van from Ubon Bus Terminal to Chong Mek for 90 Baht. You can then cross to the Laos side and take a van to Pakse; the total cost is about the same. Mr.Hotsia 2010 recommends hotels in downtown Pakse. Watch the video of the bus trip from Ubon to Pakse.
