The recommended place to stay is the downtown area. I suggest going towards the tourism office. The guesthouse is just a bit to the right at the corner. It offers wifi under the name Pinekham Douang Naly. I didn't stay here the first night because I didn't know it was affordable and had wifi. The first night I stayed at San Saly Guesthouse, which is beyond downtown near the city-bound taxi stand on the right side. This accommodation is good and clean, 400 baht per night.
The only downside is no internet wifi, but the accommodation is good. Pongsali stays cool, so no need to waste money on air conditioning. I'm not sure if they have air-conditioned rooms. Prices for places along the main road are 100,000 kip or 400 baht per night, but if you walk into alleys like where I stayed at Pinekham Douang Naly guesthouse, it's 80,000 kip or 320 baht per night.
Most travelers arrive in the evening and don't have much time to look around, so plan ahead and tell the driver who picked you up from the bus station where you will stay.
