Then take a bus from Muang Khua to Dien Bien Phu, Northern Vietnam, then continue by bus from Dien Bien Phu to Sapa. I have written travel guides for each city, just click to see how to get to each place. The bus from Muang Khua departs at 6:00 AM. Most tourists wait from 5:00 AM. There is a ferry crossing costing 20 baht per person. After crossing, you load your luggage on the roof. You must buy a ticket in advance costing 100,000 kip or 400 baht (if I remember correctly).
The bus used is a small Vietnamese bus, managed by Vietnamese staff. Seating capacity is 24 seats, but up to 40-50 people can board because there is only one trip per day, so it gets crowded. The bus arrives at Dien Bien Phu around 1:30 PM. Along the way, there is a stop for lunch at Muang Mai, a Vietnamese restaurant selling hot pho. Then the bus continues straight to the Laos border checkpoint called, and three kilometers further is the Vietnamese checkpoint named.
At the Toi Chang checkpoint, food is sold at 160 kip per person. I saw Lao people bringing sticky rice and food to eat, which I think is a good idea. Upon arrival at Dien Bien Phu, the bus stops at Dien Bien Phu bus station. Just cross the street and there are hotels to choose from. If you want to go to Sapa, you must wait for the bus tomorrow at 6:00 AM. But I recommend staying in Dien Bien Phu for 1-2 days to explore the city and talk with the Thai Dam community.
