We mainly took a boat downstream from the north. I understand that Muang Khua does not come from the word 'Muang Khua' meaning bridge in Lao language, because that name must have a long history. In the past, I think people here did not have bridges; they had to cross by raft. Therefore, I named it Muang Khua (Muang Khoua). Muang Khua has the Nam Ou river flowing through it and is the town where the Nam Phak river flows into the Nam Ou.

If traveling from Oudomxay, you drive parallel to the Nam Phak river all the way to the mouth of the Nam Noi river, where the Nam Noi flows into the Nam Phak. This is the point where we turn right to Muang Khua. The road runs parallel to the Nam Phak river until Muang Khua. In 2013, the bridge over the Nam Phak and Nam Ou rivers was completed, making travel to Dien Bien Phu easier. There are 4-5 daily buses from Muang Khua throughout the morning to afternoon. Muang Khua has become much livelier.

In the past, anyone going to Dien Bien Phu had to stay overnight in Muang Khua, then wake up at 5 a.m. to catch a bus, crossing the raft to the opposite side of the Nam Ou river and squeezing onto the bus until arriving in Dien Bien Phu in the evening. But after the bridge was completed, everything became convenient. Some tourists stay one night in Muang Khua before continuing to Dien Bien Phu. Some come from Vietnam and stay here. I have a friend named Nang Saeng who runs a restaurant at the bus station in the town center.

The bus station to the terminal is at the right turn to cross the bridge over the Nam Phak river. If you visit this town, try to say hello. I heard she is about to get married and soon will have many descendants in Muang Khua. Travel to Muang Khua is served by regular buses from Oudomxay, two trips daily in the morning and afternoon. Or you can take a boat from the Phongsali shore. The boat departs around 10:00 a.m. and arrives in Muang Khua at 5:00 p.m. You can also enter from Dien Bien Phu, Vietnam. Traveling upstream by boat from Nong Khiang, Muang Ngoy is not popular.

For mr.hotsia, I traveled twice by bus from Oudomxay and twice by boat. To know bus departure times from Oudomxay, check the schedule at the Oudomxay bus station which I have provided. There are more accommodations in Muang Khua than I expected, and several new places have opened in the past three years. I have stayed at Cam Ou Guesthouse and Nang Saeng Guesthouse. If mr.hotsia recommends, stay at Cam Ou Guesthouse. It is affordable and decent. Most importantly, it has a beautiful view of the Nam Ou river. In the evening, you can see girls bathing in the river or washing their vehicles.

At night, this place is one of the popular restaurants among tourists. Waking up early, the view from Cam Ou Guesthouse nestled in the valley is the best in Muang Khua. The guesthouse and restaurant Cam Ou Nam Ou Guesthouse & Restaurant actually have many other accommodations with good views along the Nam Phak river. I took photos of their names but have never stayed there. They probably have beautiful views of evening activities with children playing in the Nam Phak river. In the town, there are also quite good hotels not far from the riverbank, suitable for those who do not prioritize scenic views.

Try walking along the main street. I think there are about 20 or more hotels in Muang Khua. This is my estimate after counting. For simple lunch or breakfast, Nang Saeng's restaurant near the bus station not far from the Nam Phak river bridge is good. I saw several foreigners dining there, and I also ate there. For dinner, Cam Ou restaurant where I stayed is suitable for a special meal with a view of the evening and night. The food is not expensive and the view is beautiful. I also ate at other restaurants in town.

Pho by the roadside near the morning and evening markets is popular among locals and affordable. For those who want to eat local food, buy sticky rice and various steamed dishes at the morning market to eat in your room. For tourists visiting Muang Khua, the top activity at night is walking and taking photos at the old suspension bridge over the Nam Phak river. Watch the evening activities of Muang Khua residents bathing in the Nam Phak river, children playing in the water, and locals watering plants. The best time is about one hour before dark.

The second activity is enjoying the view at Cam Ou restaurant while having dinner with Nam Ou river fish and Beer Lao. I also like to wake up early to walk the morning market and the evening market in Muang Khua. Most tourists arrive in the late afternoon and leave early the next morning.
