View the map of Savannakhet Province supported by Japan (JICA). This route has fairly easy roads. Ride out of Savannakhet on main road 35, a well-paved asphalt road. Then continue riding about 40 kilometers to the Tripitaka Library, passing Nong Pa Pha (Softshell Turtle Pond) before touring in a circular route to the Tripitaka Library, Monkey Forest, and Bueng Sui. Start with Nong Pa Pha or Softshell Turtle Pond, where hundreds of softshell turtles live, the largest weighing 50 kilograms. I did not see any turtles myself, but there was a sign explaining about them.
If you want to see them, children call out “Kwai Tu” and the turtles will come up to be seen. You might wonder what Kwai Tu is; it refers to young buffalo with short horns. I tried calling but no turtles appeared, so I continued to the Tripitaka Library. From Nong Pa Pha, ride a few more kilometers to reach the Tripitaka Library. This hall stores hundreds of ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. It is very old and is a wooden hall situated in the middle of the water. Next to the library is another pavilion over the water.
The locals say that Phra Thep built it to help preserve the ancient palm-leaf manuscripts. Not far from the library, ride your motorcycle across the Xe River. In Laos, all rivers are called Xe, which can be confusing. Let’s just say this is another Xe River branch. I crossed during the dry season in January. On the other side is the Monkey Forest, home to several monkeys, though not the hundreds I had hoped to see. If you get hungry like me, ride into the village to find sticky rice and fried fish to eat.
Then continue to visit Bueng Sui, a lake larger than Bueng Wa. Stop for a while; it’s less hot here compared to Bueng Wa. After the tour, I rode back to Savannakhet, arriving at my accommodation around 4 PM. This route is interesting for the Tripitaka Library and the chance to visit villages as you wish. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Savannakhet.
