Laos, Savannakhet Province

Project gen by hotsia

Travel Savannakhet - Savannakhet travel information, Phra That Ing Hang and Bueng Wa, Savannakhet Bus Station, Mukdahan-Lao land border checkpoint, Savannakhet-Mukdahan river checkpoint. Savannakhet is the most populated province in Laos, birthplace of Thongloun Sisoulith. This province faces Mukdahan Province of Thailand and has the first Mekong River bridge, a main route of Vietnam's R8 connecting to the Laos-Bao Vietnam border checkpoint and the Savannakhet border checkpoint of Laos.

Come to Savannakhet to connect to Mae Sot and cross into Myanmar (there are buses from Savannakhet to Mae Sot). Savannakhet is an important port city of Laos, rivaling Vientiane. Known tourist spots for Thais include Phra That Ing Hang. Other popular destinations for foreigners are the Muang Phon route, Hor Trai Pitak, Dong Ling, Nong Pa Fa, and Bueng Sui. The distance from Savannakhet city to these attractions is about 70 kilometers, with increasing visitors daily.

Motorcycle rentals in Savannakhet make traveling convenient. Read about my trips here. For those who enjoy gambling, Savannakhet has a large casino, Savannakhet Vegas, popular among Thai gamblers—I often see cars with Thai license plates there. Savannakhet offers beautiful views of the Mekong River and its bridge. The locals are lively and sociable, making visits enjoyable.

Traveling to Savannakhet is easy since it is opposite Mukdahan. You can cross from Mukdahan Province via the Mekong River bridge by bus from the bus terminal to Savannakhet bus station. Buses run all day. Alternatively, take a boat from near the Indo-China market in Mukdahan to Savannakhet. I stayed several nights in Savannakhet province, almost a week. I recommend staying at Suay Suk Guesthouse, a wooden house with a kind owner. Prices start at 30,000 kip or 120 baht, and it is clean.

Mr.Hotsia recommends it. Regarding motorcycle rentals, there are only a few shops with prices around 80,000 kip per 24 hours. Renting through hotels is more expensive, up to 100,000 kip (400 baht). Many Thais visit Savannakhet, so kip currency is widely accepted in the riverside town, but deeper inside, kip is used exclusively. For traveling in Laos, Mr.Hotsia uses Laos' 3G internet nationwide, costing 200 baht per month for 1 GB.

This is enough for checking email and Facebook comfortably. For heavier use, you pay a bit more. Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar all have 3G networks, unlike Thailand which is still testing in some areas.
