Travel to Indawgyi Lake, Kachin State, Myanmar with mr.hotsia

The journey to Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, is an experience I, mr.hotsia, sincerely want to share. This lake is located in the northernmost part of Myanmar. Nowadays, the roads have improved greatly, making what used to be a difficult trip much more comfortable. What once took several days can now be traveled overnight from Yangon to Myitkyina.

My route started with a northern bus leaving Yangon at 3 PM. The bus passed roads under construction, which significantly reduced travel time. I arrived in Hopin early the next morning. The bus stopped here before I took a local pickup truck for another leg to Indawgyi Lake. The trip took about an hour and a half on roads passing rice fields and small villages. I was in no rush because I wanted to absorb the local atmosphere and the authentic feel of Kachin State.

Exploring Hopin's morning market and tasting local food

Early morning in Hopin features a small market that opens while it is still dark. I strolled to observe villagers selling fresh produce from farms and rivers, including vegetables, fruits, fish, and local dishes to sample. I tried hot Burmese rice porridge along with simple strong coffee there. The food's taste and market atmosphere reminded me of the morning market in Myitkyina. For those interested, more details can be found in the articleMyitkyina Morning Market, Kachin State, Myanmarthat I have written before.

Indawgyi Lake and charming accommodation with a military atmosphere

Upon arrival at Indawgyi Lake, I chose to stay at Indaw Mahar Guesthouse, commonly called “Ban Long Thung” (Field House). This accommodation is managed by the military but offers a simple and safe feeling. Rooms are modest, suitable for 1-2 people, priced around 300 baht per night. No advance booking is needed. If full, the military helps arrange nearby homestays. I find this to be another charm of visiting Indawgyi, as this atmosphere is unique and allows genuine interaction with local villagers.

Indawgyi Lake is an ideal place to relax and immerse in nature. The water is clear and cool, surrounded by beautiful mountain views. I have previously written about traveling to Myitkyina, which is not far away. For those interested in this route, seeTravel to Myitkyinawhich helps deepen understanding of the route and lifestyle of people in Kachin State.

Kachin villagers' lifestyle by the lake and their food

I, mr.hotsia, enjoy exploring local lifestyles on every trip, and Indawgyi is no exception. The villagers here live simply and are friendly. They firmly preserve the culture and traditions of the Red Tai and Shan peoples. The main activities are rice farming and traditional fishing. I witnessed traditional fishing methods and tasted local dishes made from fresh lake ingredients, such as freshly grilled fish over charcoal, served with sticky rice and a special chili paste recipe from the villagers.

If you want to know more about Kachin food, I have written aboutKachin Cuisine in Myitkyinawhich provides deeper insight into the flavors and ingredients used in this area.

Convenience and charm of traveling in Kachin State

Compared to the past, traveling in Kachin State today is much more convenient. Roads have improved so much that difficult routes are no longer a concern. I, mr.hotsia, took only an overnight bus from Yangon to Myitkyina. There are also direct flights from Yangon or Mandalay to Myitkyina. Although airfares are higher than bus fares, flying is a convenient option for travelers with limited time. For details on flying and information about Myitkyina, see the articleTravel to Myitkyinathat I have shared.

Summary of the experience at Indawgyi Lake from mr.hotsia

Traveling to Indawgyi Lake is not just a visit to an ordinary lake; it is an opportunity to experience the life, ways, and culture of the Kachin people living in this area. I, mr.hotsia, appreciate the tranquility and natural beauty here. The simple accommodation amid a military atmosphere is warmed by the kindness of the villagers. Improved roads make travel easier, and I highly recommend everyone to visit at least once.
