Travel to Myitkyina, Kachin State, Myanmar with mr.hotsia
If you love exploring new routes in Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my in-depth experience of traveling to Myitkyina, Kachin State, from firsthand experience. This trip was not like a typical tourist trip where you fly and arrive quickly, but an adventure full of challenges and rapid changes in Myanmar's developing transportation system.
Departing from Mandalay to Myitkyina... Overnight on a VIP sleeper bus
I started my journey from Mandalay around 3 PM by taking a VIP sleeper bus. Although called VIP, the seats do not recline fully as expected, so you have to lean throughout the night. The road is under renovation in several sections, reducing travel time. Instead of arriving around noon as expected, I reached Myitkyina at 10:30 AM the next day.
For bus ticket booking on the Mandalay to Myitkyina route, I recommend contacting the Fortune Hotel in Mandalay. They handle both outbound and return tickets, which is more convenient than buying tickets yourself, which can be complicated. There is also a bus departing Myitkyina at 10:00 AM, arriving in Mandalay around 4 AM the next day.
Another option for those who prefer not to take the sleeper bus is to fly directly from Yangon or Mandalay to Myitkyina. Airfare starts at about 100 USD and must be booked in advance as tickets sell out quickly. There are several flights daily, making it easy to choose a suitable time.
Accommodation in Myitkyina: New Light Hotel and surrounding atmosphere
Myitkyina city is open to tourists, but if you plan to go outside the city, check with your hotel for details. I stayed at New Light Hotel, with rooms priced around 17,000 kyats per night. The hotel is near the lively Myitkyina morning market, a central trading hub in the city.
There are several accommodations in Myitkyina, but I recommend 3-4 places around the market for convenience and authentic local life experience. For more details about the morning market and city atmosphere, you can readMyitkyina Morning Market, Kachin State, Myanmarwhich I have previously documented.
Myitkyina Morning Market: Experience Local Life and Flavors
The Myitkyina morning market is one of my favorite charms, located by the Irrawaddy River. Early in the morning, locals sell fresh fish and vegetables energetically. The market is divided into two zones: an indoor area open during the day and a front area that opens before dawn. Highlights include piles of fermented fish and fish balls made from a special local recipe. Also notable is the way fish are arranged on green leaves, a rare sight elsewhere.
The market atmosphere reminds me of the simple and warm lifestyle of the Kachin people. If you enjoy such market vibes, I recommend visiting and tasting local food in Myitkyina fully.
Exploring the Origin of the Irrawaddy River: The Confluence of Myanmar's Major Rivers
If you have time, I suggest renting a motorcycle from the hotel and going on a trip.MyitsoneThe starting point of the Irrawaddy River formed by the confluence of the Mali and N'Mai Rivers, about a one-hour drive from Myitkyina city. I enjoy the scenery along the way, with small villages and wide rice fields where you can stop and observe local life closely.
The Irrawaddy River, Myanmar's main artery, is over 2,170 kilometers long and a vital water source for agriculture and fishing. This spot holds great historical and natural significance and is highly recommended by mr.hotsia to experience firsthand.
Food and Lifestyle in Myitkyina and Mandalay
For those who love traditional Myanmar cuisine, Myitkyina will not disappoint. The food here includes fresh river fish and local dishes with bold flavors similar to Mandalay, which I have written about inMandalay CuisineStreet food in Myanmar is convenient and delicious, with many options from roadside stalls to upscale hotel restaurants.
In Myitkyina, there are local restaurants and markets offering authentic Kachin flavors. Here you can find fish dishes and fish balls made from fresh fish, as well as Burmese fried rice, which I often order. I recommend trying fresh Myanmar beer, which is affordable and tasty, to enjoy while soaking in the local evening atmosphere.
