Meiktila City: A lakeside town and Burmese lifestyle you shouldn't miss

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel through and stay inMeiktila Citywhich is located in Mandalay Region, Myanmar. This city may not be widely known among foreign tourists, as most people tend to head to larger cities like Mandalay or Bagan. But for me, Meiktila is another interesting destination with authentic Burmese charm that I want to invite everyone to open their hearts and experience at least once.

Why Meiktila?

This city is situated onMeiktila Lakean irrigation lake stretching 11 kilometers long and about 0.80 kilometers wide. It is a key connection point for the highways Bagan-Tongyi, Yangon-Mandalay, and Meiktila-Myingyan. This makes the city a transportation and education hub, especially as the location of the Myanmar Air Force and the country's largest aviation technical university.

Getting to Meiktila

For a traveler like me, mr.hotsia, getting to Meiktila is not difficult. I chose to take a bus from Mandalay, which takes about 3-4 hours. The bus was full of Burmese people traveling for business or visiting relatives mixed with many university students in this city. There are very few foreign tourists, but recently I have noticed more people becoming interested in this city, especially those traveling from Bagan to Inle Lake or along this central route.

Although many worry about safety due to past conflicts between Buddhists and Muslims, from my experience walking around markets and streets in the city, I felt safe and the locals were friendly. You can feel at ease.

Accommodation and City Atmosphere

I stayed atHoney Hotela medium-sized hotel costing about 30 USD per night. The rooms were clean, with hot water, and the staff spoke good English. The hotel is located in the city center, next to Meiktila Lake, making it convenient to walk around the city. Breakfast is included in the price. Cheaper rooms in Meiktila generally do not welcome foreign tourists as much.

The atmosphere in Meiktila feels peaceful. The morning market, which impressed me greatly, is near the train station. Vendors simply display their goods on the ground, offering many local foods and snacks to taste. I liked it here because the food was delicious and affordable, unlike some other cities in Myanmar where food can be bland or overpriced.

Food in Meiktila: A Paradise for Food Lovers

Speaking of food in this city, I, mr.hotsia, was truly impressed. Street food rice and curry dishes cost only about 30 baht, with bold and balanced flavors. Many Chinese and Burmese restaurants offer diverse menus, such as a roast duck shop I found near a red light in front of a khanom krok (Thai coconut pancake) shop, and a sweet and sour stir-fry restaurant on the main road near Honey Hotel. The sweet and sour stir-fry here tastes much better than what I've had in other cities.

Another place I like to stop by isChampion Coffeea small coffee shop selling fresh coffee for 30 baht per cup. As I write this article, I am sitting in this shop. The atmosphere is nice, with students and locals working or chatting. They offer single-dish meals at reasonable prices around 70 baht, which are generous and very tasty. Lifestyle and Diversity of Meiktila Residents

Meiktila Lake divides the city into two sides. The side where I stayed is a Buddhist community that is peaceful and friendly. The other side, accessible by a 'kalarwek' boat (a Buddhist boat used for travel and worship at temples), has a larger Muslim community. I crossed over to see the atmosphere and found people shopping and living their daily lives normally. Although there were some glances exchanged between the two sides, I saw no tension or violence, which differs from the past news I had heard.

If you like authentic local atmosphere, I recommend waking early to walk the morning market or taking a boat ride on Meiktila Lake. This is an activity I really enjoyed because it lets you see villagers' lifestyles and closely experience nature.

Temples and Attractions in the City

Meiktila has several temples worth visiting, such as Shwemyintin, Shweyinmi, Nagayon, and Yele temples. Each temple has interesting architecture and historical significance. I leisurely toured these temples and observed the Burmese people sincerely making merit and practicing their faith.

Visiting temples here feels more peaceful and profound than stopping by temples in larger tourist cities in Myanmar. I recommend exploring on your own to feel the spiritual energy here.

Connecting Travel in Mandalay Region

For tourists interested in visiting other cities in Mandalay Region, I recommend reading my hotel guide article for Pyin Oo Lwin city.Click here to readas well as special activities like horse carriage rides in Pyin Oo Lwin's public park, which I have written about.Read more herePyin Oo Lwin is not far from Meiktila and offers a distinctly different atmosphere.

Personal Memorable Experiences

Besides food and market walks, I, mr.hotsia, also tried a unique experience at a beauty salon in this city, where the ladies wash hair, massage the face, and scrub the back all at once. It's something I have never encountered anywhere else. This warm and friendly service reflects the simple yet charming lifestyle of Meiktila's Burmese people.

In summary, Meiktila is a city I want to recommend to those who enjoy deep, unhurried travel, stopping to truly experience local life, learn culture, and enjoy delicious local food. This is not a major tourist city but one with genuine charm.

For anyone planning to travel in Mandalay Region, I suggest using Meiktila as a stopover or a place to visit along the way. You may find peace and the sincerity of Burmese people in a different light than elsewhere.
