Thephee Market Mandalay: The lifestyle and charm of roadside Mandalay ladies
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to rent a motorcycle to explore outside Mandalay city on one trip. My main destinations were Mingun and Sagaing Hills. However, the unexpected and impressive highlight I want to share is Thephee Market, located by the roadside just before entering Mandalay city on the right side.
On the first day I passed by, the market was very lively. Many Mandalay ladies sat in a row on tall chairs, resembling a roadside beauty contest. Everyone was selling Mandalay sweets similar to our local caramelized treats. Each had a smiling face welcoming visitors. I didn’t stop that day, but deep inside I wanted to come back again.
On the second day, I made sure to stop by. I walked slowly, greeting the ladies at each stall who were selling sweets with dedication. Some stalls didn’t allow photos, but I managed to capture many shots of the charming contestants and recorded a video that fully captured the market’s atmosphere.
Thephee Market is not an ordinary market like those commonly seen in Thailand. The 'Thephee' section seems to be a permanent selling point, with Mandalay ladies sitting in a row by the roadside selling a variety of delicious sweets. The sweets here resemble caramelized treats but also include other local specialties. Interestingly, each stall displays an old-fashioned hanging scale, adding a nostalgic and charming touch.
I really like the lifestyle of the people in this market. It reflects the simplicity yet charm of Mandalay people who still preserve their traditional culture, even though Mandalay city itself is becoming more developed and modern.
Travel and Surrounding Atmosphere of Thephee Market
For tourists planning to visit Mandalay and interested in experiencing Thephee Market atmosphere, renting a motorcycle or using hired transport is very convenient. The market is located by the main road before entering Mandalay city on the right side if coming from Mingun or Sagaing Hills.
The surrounding atmosphere of the market is like a typical roadside market, offering fresh and dried goods, local food, and many sweets to choose from. I personally tried Mandalay sweets sold by the ladies, which were delicious with just the right sweetness and a slight crispiness. Talking with the shop owners made me feel like I was truly experiencing the local life here.
The Charm of Mandalay through the Market and Lifestyle
Thephee Market is another charm of Mandalay city that I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend to visitors. Some may know Mandalay as a city with ancient pagodas and temples, but I prefer the lifestyle of the people and markets like this that still maintain local identity very well.
If you want to experience local food and the lifestyle of Mandalay people yourself, I recommend checking outAmarapura City Cuisine, Mandalaywhich is another nearby city where I have tried simple local food that is just as delicious as anywhere else.
Also, if you plan to stay in the Mandalay area and want to experience a cool highland town atmosphere likePyin Oo LwinI highly recommend it. Besides good accommodations like the Bravo Hotel where I stayed, there are flower gardens and horse carriage tours around the town that you shouldn’t miss.Horse Carriage Tour in Pyin Oo Lwin and Pyin Oo Lwin Public ParkThis was another experience that impressed me greatly.
Closing Thoughts on Thephee Market
If you want to see images of Mandalay ladies in traditional costumes selling sweets like a roadside beauty contest, Thephee Market is a perfect choice. Sometimes traveling doesn’t just mean visiting big tourist attractions, but truly experiencing the real life of local people here makes the journey more meaningful.
Next time you have a chance to visit Mandalay, don’t forget to stop by Thephee Market. You will discover another warm and lively side of Mandalay city as I, mr.hotsia, have shared.
