Traveling from Mandalay to Bagan (Pagan) with mr.hotsia
When talking about the journey from Mandalay to the city of Bagan, also known as Pagan, the city of a thousand pagodas in Myanmar, this route is one of the trips I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend for an in-depth experience because it offers a genuine encounter with the charm and authentic local atmosphere.
How to choose your travel method?
For me, I chose to take the tourist-only bus service operated by OK company, which is a popular choice among travelers seeking comfort and affordable prices. The fare is about 300 baht per person (I admit I don't remember the exact price, but it was very reasonable). The trip takes about 5 hours including a rest stop. The rest stop is special because you get to taste “fried sparrows,” a local crispy and delicious snack. This is my favorite moment as mr.hotsia because it lets me experience Myanmar through extraordinary roadside food.
There are multiple bus trips daily, and the pick-up and drop-off points are very convenient. If you stay at the Fortune Hotel in Mandalay, you can book your ticket there, and the bus will pick you up right in front of the hotel, making the start of your journey smooth.
For those with limited budget or time, flying from Mandalay to Bagan is a good option and takes little time. Alternatively, if you enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, cruising from Mandalay to Bagan is an experience not to be missed. It takes about 8 hours with a fare around 1,500 baht, offering beautiful views of both riverbanks and the riverside lifestyle.
Bagan, the city of pagodas and culture
Upon arriving in Bagan, the first thing I, mr.hotsia, felt was the grandeur of the city filled with numerous pagodas and ancient sites. It feels like stepping back in time to an ancient era that still holds elegance and mystique. Since Bagan is a major tourist city in Myanmar, there are shuttle services for tourists between Mandalay, Inle, and Yangon, mostly filled with travelers like me.
Along the way, the bus often stops for meals or restroom breaks at various rest stops. The food at these roadside restaurants is tastier and cleaner than expected. Although prices are slightly higher than usual, it is worth it and helps recharge energy for the long journey.
Food and travel in Mandalay before departure
Before leaving Mandalay, I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying local food here at least once. The cuisine is not very different from Yangon, especially the street food with a variety of dishes to choose from, such as fried rice which I often order or simple Burmese noodles served with fresh vegetables and spicy dipping sauce.Read more about Mandalay local foodhere
If you want to experience the authentic Mandalay lifestyle, I suggest walking through markets or dining at restaurants popular among locals to get the true atmosphere and affordable prices.
Stop by Pyin Oo Lwin, an interesting detour
If you have extra time, I recommend stopping at Pyin Oo Lwin before heading to Bagan. This hill station town features beautiful flower gardens and European-style architecture. I, mr.hotsia, once stayed at Bravo Hotel located in the city center near the clock tower. It’s a place I highly recommend for its great atmosphere and excellent service.Read hotel recommendations in Pyin Oo Lwinright here
One of my favorite activities is riding a horse carriage around the town and the National Kandawgyi Gardens, a large botanical garden with a variety of plants and orchids. It’s a peaceful spot I encourage you to experience.See my horse carriage experience in Pyin Oo Lwinthat I have written about
Rest and food along the way
Throughout the journey from Mandalay to Bagan, I, mr.hotsia, noticed the bus stops at restaurants favored by both locals and tourists. The food here is spicy and flavorful, easily appealing to Thai taste buds like ours. I enjoy trying local snacks like fried sparrows or signature dishes at these roadside eateries during breaks.
The atmosphere along the way is another charm I never tire of: small villages, simple local lifestyles, local motorcycles passing by, and roadside markets full of fresh food.
Summary of experience from mr.hotsia
Traveling from Mandalay to Bagan with me, mr.hotsia, is a memorable trip for its convenience, delicious food, and close encounter with local life. I appreciate that the bus service picks up right at the hotel and that the breaks offer authentic and tasty Burmese food.
