Sea of Pagodas, Bagan, Myanmar: An ancient city you must see with your own eyes
When talking about Myanmar, the first thing that comes to my mind is the “Sea of Pagodas” in Bagan, or as locals call it, Pukam (Bagan). This city is filled with thousands of ancient pagodas and temples. The Sea of Pagodas is located in the Mandalay Region, on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River, about 145 kilometers southwest of Mandalay city, covering a vast area of 65 square kilometers. It is one of the most important cultural heritage sites in Myanmar and Southeast Asia.
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to visit the Sea of Pagodas in Bagan during the dry season. I witnessed the sunrise over thousands of pagoda spires scattered across the area. It was so beautiful it looked like a painting come to life, the scenes often seen in books or postcards. The feeling at that moment was truly worth waking up at 5:30 AM to climb up and watch the first light of the day. Although the climb was quite steep and dark, requiring a flashlight, the beauty of the Sea of Pagodas bathed in golden sunlight made all the fatigue disappear.
History and uniqueness of the Sea of Pagodas in Bagan
The Sea of Pagodas in Bagan was built from the mid-11th century to the late 13th century during the prosperous era of the Pagan Kingdom. It was constructed as a religious and administrative center. Today, there are over 2,217 pagodas and temples spread throughout the area. The oldest and most significant pagoda is the Shwezigon Pagoda, built by King Anawrahta, and the Ananda Temple, the largest and best-preserved temple, built in 1105. I had the chance to admire the architecture and murals that have retained their beauty despite the passage of several centuries.
Travel and preparation for visiting the Sea of Pagodas
For those planning to visit the Sea of Pagodas in Bagan, traveling from Mandalay to Bagan can be done in several ways, including hiring a taxi, motorcycle, or even a traditional horse carriage still available in the area. I recommend contacting your hotel in Bagan to arrange for an English-speaking driver, which will make traveling more convenient and safer. Especially if you want to watch the sunrise, it is best to book at least one day in advance because that time is crowded and requires some preparation.
I personally tried riding a horse carriage to see the pagodas in the evening while waiting for the sunset. The atmosphere was very romantic and peaceful, quite different from the busy and crowded mornings filled with tourists and professional photographers waiting to capture the beautiful views before dawn.
Best time and unique experiences by mr.hotsia
From my experience, mr.hotsia, the best time to visit the Sea of Pagodas in Bagan is between November and February. During this period, the weather is cool and the sky is clear, perfect for climbing the relatively tall and steep pagoda tops. In contrast, the rainy season from May to September is best avoided because the roads become slippery and climbing the pagodas is very difficult. Also, the famous hot air balloon rides over the Sea of Pagodas are usually not available during this time.
What impressed me the most was seeing hot air balloons floating over the pagodas at dawn. It was a stunning and unforgettable sight, a unique experience not easily found elsewhere.
Connecting travel and accommodation in Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin
After exploring the Sea of Pagodas, I recommend visiting Mandalay, which is not far away, to experience authentic local life and cuisine, such as at the Thepyi Market. You can also drive to Pyin Oo Lwin, located on the Shan Plateau with cool weather year-round. There are good hotels here, like the Bravo Hotel where I stayed and was impressed by the service. Activities include horse carriage rides to see the flower gardens and the charming old town.Pyin Oo Lwin Flower Gardenwhich is a great place to relax after touring the Sea of Pagodas.
If you want to try local food around Mandalay, I recommend reading my articleAmarapura Cuisine, Mandalaywhere I shared the flavors and atmosphere of having breakfast with locals, adding another perspective that made my trip even more complete.
Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
For me, the Sea of Pagodas in Bagan is not just an ordinary tourist destination but a place full of history, faith, and the grandeur of ancient architecture. Visiting the Sea of Pagodas at dawn and seeing hot air balloons floating above the pagodas is an experience I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone try at least once in their lifetime.
