Thephee Market Mandalay: The charm of local snacks and beautiful roadside ladies

When it comes to markets that impressed me, mr.hotsia, in Mandalay, Myanmar, Thephee Market is definitely one of the must-visit destinations. On the first day, I rented a motorcycle to go outside the city to Mingun and Sagaing hills. On my way back into Mandalay city, I passed Thephee Market but due to limited time, I didn’t stop to explore seriously.

However, the next day I purposely returned to visit this market to fully explore and experience the atmosphere of Thephee Market. Thephee Market is located along the road leading back into Mandalay city, on the right side before entering the city center. The overall market resembles a roadside flea market like those in Thailand, with a variety of goods for sale. What makes this market stand out and unique is the area called “Thephee,” which is a group of Mandalay girls sitting and selling local traditional snacks in small shops with tall chairs arranged like a beauty pageant stage.

The image of these girls sitting in a row on tall chairs, resembling a beauty contest, gives the market a lively and strangely charming atmosphere. In front of them, Mandalay snacks are neatly arranged, including various types of kalamae, which look and taste similar to Thai sweet crispy peanut snacks, but there are also other local snacks I have never seen anywhere else. Another interesting feature is the “antique scales” hanging in front of each shop, still used to weigh snacks for sale. This scene straightforwardly tells the story of Mandalay people’s way of life.

I, mr.hotsia, greeted each girl at every shop attentively. Some allowed me to take photos, others were not comfortable, so I respectfully captured images and recorded video clips to show the real atmosphere of this market. For those who love deep local lifestyle and culture, Thephee Market is the answer that made me feel I truly experienced “Mandalay,” not just a big city full of tourists and modern shops.

Thephee Market in the context of Mandalay and mr.hotsia’s journey

Mandalay is a large city with its own unique charm, whether in food, lifestyle, or nearby tourist attractions, as I have shared in previous articles.Amarapura local cuisine in MandalayNot far from Mandalay, there are local dishes worth trying. Or if you want a change of scenery, I have recommended taking a horse carriage tour around Pyin Oo Lwin city and its beautiful flower gardens.Horse carriage tour in Pyin Oo Lwin city, Pyin Oo Lwin public parkwhich is a bit farther away.

Back to Thephee Market in Mandalay, this market is a great stop after I rode my motorcycle exploring Mingun and Sagaing hills because it offers a lively roadside community atmosphere and shows people who firmly preserve their traditional way of life. The snacks sold here are special because each shop has its own recipe and flavor. Although the snacks look similar, tasting them reveals interesting differences.

The taste and charm of Mandalay snacks

Thephee Market offers many types of Mandalay snacks, but the most prominent is kalamae, a crispy sweet snack with a fragrant sweetness similar to Thai kalamae but with a unique Burmese texture and aroma. I, mr.hotsia, sampled many shops; some use roasted peanuts mixed in, some have sweeter or less sweet flavors depending on each shop’s recipe. Besides kalamae, there are other local Mandalay snacks, such as soft-textured sweets made from flour and brown sugar, blending sweet and rich flavors perfectly.

Besides food, watching Mandalay girls sitting gracefully on tall chairs selling snacks is a scene that reminds me of a simple lifestyle filled with pride in their culture. Thephee Market is not just a market but a small stage showcasing the beauty of women and the art of snack-making passed down through generations.

Experience and advice from mr.hotsia

If you travel to Mandalay and want to deeply experience local life, Thephee Market is a place I recommend visiting at least once. I suggest renting a motorcycle like I did for convenience and freedom to stop at various places around the city. On your way back from Mingun or Sagaing hills, you will pass this market and see beautiful girls sitting and selling snacks along the roadside.

Don’t forget to bring your camera because the photos you get will be unique and capture the beauty of this roadside market that is hard to find elsewhere. Also, if you are interested in local food in Mandalay or nearby cities like Amarapura or Pyin Oo Lwin, try reading the articlesAmarapura local cuisine in MandalayorRecommended hotels in Pyin Oo Lwinto plan a complete and delicious trip.

Thephee Market is not a fancy or large market, but it is full of life and traditional culture that I, mr.hotsia, feel impressed every time I visit. I believe anyone who experiences it will get to know and understand Mandalay from a deeper and more intimate perspective.
