Rice Farming, Transplanting, and Seedling Planting of Burmese Farmers in Mandalay Region
When talking about the farming lifestyle in neighboring Myanmar, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience the rice farming atmosphere of the Burmese people in Mandalay region, which is an important rice cultivation area of Myanmar. Seeing the farmers use traditional methods that preserve natural agricultural ways made me feel like I was going back to the roots of Thai rice farming in my childhood, as my parents used to tell and teach me.
I grew up with rice farming in my hometown in Thailand, where the seedling planting method involves carrying seedlings to plant in the fields. During transplanting, water is released into the fields and villagers join together to transplant rice joyfully. But when I went to Mandalay, I saw a very interesting different method of seedling planting used by the Burmese farmers.
Burmese Seedling Planting: Throwing Seedlings into the Field
Burmese farmers in Mandalay use a seedling planting method unlike ours. They first grow seedlings in small plots or rows. Then, when the rice seedlings are mature, they load them onto a cart and drive the cart through the field, throwing the seedlings to scatter across the field. I really liked this method because it looks agile and more efficient for wide areas than carrying seedlings by hand to each spot like we do.
Seeing the rice seedlings scattered across the vast fields in Mandalay reminded me of the villagers’ deep connection with the soil and water. Although the area looks drier than ours, the farmers here are skilled in managing water and soil to suit local rice cultivation. I have seen transplanting done with little water, with dry fields similar to the Tai Lue style transplanting in my hometown of Sri Don Chai.
Rice Transplanting and Water Management in Mandalay
Regarding rice transplanting in Mandalay, I observed that farmers here do not flood the fields like we do. They release water at just the right level for rice growth. Some fields may be dry, but farmers transplant skillfully. This differs from the Thai method which requires more labor, as villagers usually help each other transplant in flooded fields. Burmese farmers transplant by themselves or in small family groups, showing different lifestyles and diverse agricultural wisdom.
During my trip to Mandalay, I had the chance to talk with small-scale farmers transplanting seedlings. They said this method saves a lot of time and labor and suits the environment where water is not as abundant as in central Thailand. Listening to them, I felt their lifestyle, though simple, is flexible and well adapted to the surrounding nature.
