Authentic Luk Kaew Ordination, Poi Sang Long in Mandalay
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to experience the Poi Sang Long tradition or Luk Kaew ordination held in Mandalay Region, Myanmar. This event takes place on the opposite side of the Irrawaddy River, near the road to Mingun. The ceremony has a charm and uniqueness far beyond what I expected.
When I arrived, I heard that this tradition is not only held among the Tai Yai people but also in Ton Ywa town, which is an original Burmese community. This made me think that the Poi Sang Long event is not limited to any single ethnic group but is part of the local culture that blends both Burmese and Tai Yai people together.
The Unique Atmosphere of the Luk Kaew Ordination
What impressed me most at this event was how the Luk Kaew, or the boys to be ordained, were dressed elaborately like princes before becoming novice monks. I saw beautifully decorated ox carts on which the Luk Kaew would sit and be paraded through various villages, not just to the temple. The procession travels through many villages and lasts several hours.
Some older men, whom I was not sure if they were being ordained monks or not, rode horses in the parade. The atmosphere was full of joy and community cooperation from villagers supporting the event. There was live music played on the ox carts, Burmese clowns dancing and collecting donations for the merit-making. Passing each village, sweet drinks were poured to warmly welcome everyone.
Lifestyle and Community Cooperation
Seeing the intricately decorated oxen, the music, and the smiles of the people at the event reminded me of the unity and spirit of the Burmese people. Poi Sang Long is not just a religious ritual but also an event that brings the community together in an atmosphere of happiness and faith.
Besides being held in Shan State, I also found that Poi Sang Long is celebrated in many regions of Myanmar, including northern Thailand areas like Mae Hong Son, reflecting how this tradition deeply connects people across the region.
