Shwenandaw Monastery (Shwenandaw) Mandalay: The Beauty of Wood Carving and Living History
Mandalay, a major city in northern Myanmar, known by many as a cultural and historical center. But for me, mr.hotsia, Mandalay has a unique charm that you can truly feel when you experience it deeply. One of the places I was most impressed with on this trip wasShwenandaw Monastery, also known as the Golden Palace Monasterywhich is a beautiful teakwood building rich with history, more than anything else in Mandalay.
Before coming here, I didn’t know much about this monastery, only having heard of its reputation for beautiful wood carvings. Upon arrival, the first feeling I had was a sense of peace and the exquisite craftsmanship of the architecture, intricately carved on every corner, every pillar, every window, and every door. It is the work of dedicated artisans, a true piece of art. Originally, this monastery was part of the wooden palace of King Mindon Min, a monarch who played an important role in Mandalay’s history.
The story of Shwenandaw Monastery is extraordinary because this building was once the residence of King Mindon Min before he passed away here. Later, his son relocated this building to its current location, which is why this teakwood structure has been well preserved and is considered an important cultural heritage of Myanmar.
To visit Shwenandaw Monastery and the Mandalay Palace complex, you must purchase an entrance ticket costing 10 USD or about 300 Baht. The ticket has a stamp section on the back to record which sites you have visited within the palace area. I bought this ticket and toured the sites attentively. Even though I didn’t have deep historical knowledge, seeing these wood carvings made me feel connected to the lifestyle and art of the Burmese people in the past.
For travelers who enjoy photography and studying art, Shwenandaw Monastery is a must-visit spot. Besides the beauty of the finely carved teakwood, the surrounding atmosphere is peaceful and shady, perfect for a leisurely walk while learning clearly about the lifestyle of the Burmese royal family in the past.
Mandalay, the city where I, mr.hotsia, chose to stay and eat to my heart’s content.
Before visiting Shwenandaw Monastery, I had the chance to stay in Pyin Oo Lwin, a town not far from Mandalay. It is a popular place for tourists to relax because of its pleasant atmosphere and many attractions. I stayed at Bravo Hotel, where the owner speaks fluent English and offers affordable laundry services. There is also a breakfast restaurant on the top floor with a 260-degree view of Pyin Oo Lwin. I was very impressed by this spot because I could see a small town full of flower gardens and colonial-style buildings, as well as enjoy my favorite activity of riding a horse carriage around the National Kandawgyi Gardens (read more about Pyin Oo Lwin atRecommended Hotels in Pyin Oo LwinandHorse Carriage Tour in Pyin Oo Lwin, Pyin Oo Lwin Public Park)
Back in Mandalay, the city not only has interesting temples and palaces but also local food that I really like, especially the cuisine of Amarapura, which is within the Mandalay region, such as Burmese noodles and traditional breakfast dishes I tried during my trip (read more atAmarapura Cuisine, Mandalay)
Atmosphere and Lifestyle Around the Golden Palace Monastery
Walking around Mandalay Palace and Shwenandaw Monastery, I encountered the simple lifestyle of the locals. Most people here are peaceful and kind. Sometimes you see schoolchildren walking by in their uniforms, street vendors selling goods, and foreign tourists enchanted by the charm of this city.
The markets in Mandalay are also highly recommended to visit, such asThephee Marketwhich is full of local products and fresh food. I often stroll through these markets to see and taste a variety of local foods, which makes me feel like I am truly experiencing the real life of the Burmese people rather than just passing through.
Travel Tips and Preparation

The area is quite large and consists of many interesting buildings. Additionally, traveling in Mandalay and nearby towns like Pyin Oo Lwin or Amarapura is convenient and affordable.
