Nopura Pagoda: The wonder of three stacked stone pagodas in Mandalay
If you are an adventurous traveler looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Mandalay city, I, mr.hotsia, would like to recommend experiencing something new atNopura Pagodaor what locals simply call the “Three Stone Pagodas.” This site is located about 15-20 kilometers from Mawlamyine city, roughly a 50-minute motorcycle ride.
When I arrived at the entrance to Nopura Pagoda around 3 PM, I took a less common mode of transport: a large six-wheeled truck that carries over 30 passengers per trip. The round-trip fare was about 2,000 kyats (around 70 baht). However, on that day, there were only 15 passengers, so no one wanted to pay extra to start the trip. I only managed to take photos of the entrance area and local vendors selling goods nearby to share with friends.
Nopura Pagoda is unique compared to typical pagodas because it is built from three large stones stacked vertically about 5 meters high. The stones are aligned in a striking vertical formation. It is a fragile-looking structure yet full of charm and mystery.
Unfortunately, this place is not yet popular among tourists compared to the famous and well-known Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. I only discovered Nopura Pagoda on the last day of my trip, so I didn’t get a chance to explore it closely. Next time I return to Mawlamyine, I plan to fully explore it. If my budget allows, I will rent a motorcycle myself for convenience and to save on multiple transport fares.
The charm of traveling in Mandalay and Mawlamyine
Speaking of traveling around Mandalay and nearby Mawlamyine, renting a motorcycle is a favorite option of mine, mr.hotsia, because the rental price is about 10,000 kyats per day (around 300 baht). You get to use the bike for a full 24 hours, refuel at your convenience, and stop wherever you like. I once had to pay a fine for a lost rental bike (so be careful), but otherwise, it’s very worthwhile and fun.
For those interested in staying in townPyin Oo Lwin(Pyin Oo Lwin) in Mandalay Region, I recommend Bravo Hotel, where I have stayed and was impressed by both the service and atmosphere. Especially the breakfast with a 260-degree panoramic city view, perfect for starting the day.
Life and cultural perspectives at Nopura Pagoda and surrounding areas
Besides the beauty of Nopura Pagoda, walking around the area gave me a close look at local life. The atmosphere is peaceful and natural, completely different from the busy Mandalay city. I saw people selling local souvenirs and snacks at affordable prices with delicious flavors, making me feel that traveling in Myanmar still holds traditional charm rarely found in today’s world.
For those interested in local food around Mandalay and nearby towns, I have written aboutAmarapura local cuisineandfood in Mithila townwhich feature delicious, affordable restaurants with authentic local atmospheres that you can visit during your travels.
Tips for a fulfilling trip in Mandalay
I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing well for transportation because public transit here is not as convenient as at home. Renting a motorcycle is an interesting and time-saving option compared to multiple bus rides. Or if you want a change of pace, tryhorse carriage rides in Pyin Oo Lwinwhich is another activity I really enjoyed. These carriages have enclosed cabins with doors, are comfortable to sit in, and offer beautiful views of flower gardens and historic old houses.
For anyone planning to visit Mandalay and wanting to experience nature, lifestyle, and culture, I recommend including Nopura Pagoda in your itinerary. Besides seeing a unique structure, you will also enjoy a friendly and peaceful atmosphere.
Summary of experience from mr.hotsia
Nopura Pagoda, though not famous or crowded like other pagodas in Mandalay, with its unusual structure of three stacked stones and peaceful surroundings, feels like a small hidden gem perfect for travelers who enjoy a chill trip and want to escape the crowds. Importantly, if you visit Mandalay, don’t forget to also visit Mawlamyine and Pyin Oo Lwin to experience the variety I have recommended in other articles.
