Breeze Guesthouse: A small house by the Salween River in Mawlamyine
I, mr.hotsia, am currently writing this article in the peaceful atmosphere ofBreeze Guesthousein Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar. I stayed here for 6 nights with a single room rate of only 7,000 kyats per night, which is very good value considering the location and the service received.
The highlight of Breeze Guesthouse is its location by the Salween River, allowing me to wake up early and enjoy coffee while watching the long, slow-flowing river right in front of the guesthouse. The morning atmosphere is fresh and quiet, making me reluctant to leave the upper balcony where a table and chairs are set for breakfast. The staff here are very attentive, and the owner, a Mon person, personally takes care of guests, chatting and giving travel advice, especially recommending a visit to Mon Island, which is not far away.
I usually wake up around 6 a.m. to work at the table in the guesthouse’s lounge area downstairs. This place has become like my second home because of the comfort and warmth from the owner and team. Although the Wi-Fi speed is just enough for checking emails and light work, it is understandable since Mawlamyine still experiences frequent power outages. Everyone here understands this and has backup power systems in restaurants and major hotels.
Mon Lifestyle and Culture in Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine is a city that perfectly blends Burmese and Mon cultures. I have shared stories about the local food in previous articles.Mawlamyine Local CuisineHere, you won’t find purely Mon food as clearly as in other states, but rather general Burmese dishes mixed with many Chinese restaurants. My favorite is the Mawlamyine fried chicken at a small Chinese restaurant near the guesthouse.Recommended Restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine Stir-fried ChickenA place I often visit
Breeze Guesthouse also offers Myanmar currency exchange. I initially carried 10 US dollars hidden in my belt, but when I asked to exchange to kyats here, they accepted without any problem, making it very convenient for traveling and spending in Mawlamyine.
Nearby Attractions and Transportation
From Breeze Guesthouse, I was recommended to use the local guide named Ko Thant Zin, who rides a motorcycle in front of the guesthouse. He speaks good English and took me to explore the story of Ma Myae at temples and her hometown in this city, which was a very precious experience for me.
You can also rent a motorcycle to visit Mottama, the former capital of the Mon people, easily and at a reasonable price (about 15,000 kyats round trip). Traveling to Mottama is much easier now thanks to a bridge crossing the Salween River. I recommend visiting Sarphu Island, also known as Shampoo Island, which is not far from Mottama and is another interesting natural tourist spot in Mon State.Shampoo Island)
The Atmosphere of Mawlamyine I Experienced
This city is not just a tourist destination but a place full of stories and traditional Mon culture that is still strongly preserved. I felt like I was traveling back in time to explore a legendary city I had heard about through songs and stories from older generations, such as the story of Ma Myae that I intentionally sought out.
There are many riverside restaurants along the Salween River here. Although some have many flies naturally, they manage this with candles and cleanliness to an acceptable level. My favorite is the Mawlamyine fried chicken restaurant by the river, serving tasty food at affordable prices, making a memorable end to each meal.
This trip to Mawlamyine was not just a change of vacation spot but an opening of my heart to truly understand the diverse lifestyles and cultures of the Mon and Burmese people in this city. Every step and conversation with locals made me feel like I was experiencing a different perspective on life and enriched my travel experience beyond ordinary trips.
For anyone interested in visiting Mawlamyine on their own, I recommend staying atBreeze Guesthouseat least once to truly experience the atmosphere by the Salween River with warm service from the owner and team here. You will feel like you have a second home in this small town just like I do.
