Recommended restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine stir-fried chicken and local flavors you must try

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience local and Chinese cuisine in Mawlamyine, Mon State, Myanmar. This is a city where I spent several days relaxing and strolling around, almost like a second home. My dining experience here is one of the most memorable that I want to share in detail because Mawlamyine's food has a unique charm unlike any other.

When talking about Mawlamyine, many might think of the riverside city on the Salween River where Mon culture blends perfectly with Burmese culture. I have deeply experienced this as described in the article.Traveling Mawlamyine on Your OwnandMawlamyine Local CuisineThere are many styles of restaurants here, but the one I sincerely recommend is a Chinese restaurant offering fried chicken and stir-fried chicken with authentic Mawlamyine local recipes that you should not miss.

How to Get to the Mawlamyine Stir-Fried Chicken Restaurant

This restaurant is located on the road along the Salween River. If you stay atThe Breeze Guest Houselike me, walk out of the guesthouse, turn right and walk about 200 meters. The restaurant is right at the street corner on the right side, very easy to spot. The restaurant is calledBONE GYI RESTAURANTwhich is a Chinese restaurant that perfectly blends local Mawlamyine dishes.

Signature Dishes: Local Style Stir-Fried Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice

The dish I always order every time I visit is the “Local Style Stir-Fried Chicken,” known locally as “Mawlamyine Fried Chicken.” This dish stands out because it uses a lot of garlic, fried until fragrant, and importantly, no MSG as I requested (in Burmese, MSG is “kosumo,” and to say no MSG, say “no kosumo”). The flavor is therefore very mellow and natural. The chicken is crispy on the outside and tender inside, eaten with hot steamed rice and enhanced by a special dipping sauce prepared by the restaurant.

Another must-try dish is the “Shrimp Fried Rice,” featuring large fresh shrimp mixed with beautifully cooked rice. The flavor is balanced and not too oily. It pairs perfectly with the fried chicken. The prices are budget-friendly: local fried chicken costs about 120 baht, and shrimp fried rice is 100 baht. This is very reasonable considering the taste and the riverside Salween atmosphere you will enjoy.

Atmosphere and Sincerity of the Restaurant

As I mentioned, the restaurant has quite a few flies because they leave trash beside the restaurant to let water naturally flow into the Salween River. What impressed me is that the restaurant uses candles and natural methods to repel flies instead of chemicals. The atmosphere here feels friendly and truly close to the local way of life.

The restaurant also offers a variety of drinks including wine, liquor, and Burmese beer. Although wine prices are higher than in Laos, I chose to drink a little Burmese beer to cool off and enhance the dining experience.

mr.hotsia’s Personal Experience at BONE GYI RESTAURANT

On October 27, 2013, I returned to eat Mawlamyine-style fried chicken again after trying many restaurants in this city. The feeling was the same: delicious and satisfying. I ate while chatting with my travel companion. I recorded a video clip longer than 20 minutes. It was a moment of joy with the unique flavors and atmosphere of Mawlamyine before returning to Thailand the next day.

If you travel to Mawlamyine, don’t forget to stop by this restaurant. Besides tasting the excellent fried chicken and shrimp fried rice, it’s a great opportunity to experience the genuine fusion of Chinese and Mon local food culture. This is one of the restaurants I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend.
