Travel Malamyaung by Yourself: The Land by the Salween River in Mon State
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today I am writing this article from the living room ofThe Breeze Guesthouselocated by the Salween River in Malamyaung city, Mon State, Myanmar. The atmosphere around is filled with the calmness of the river flowing along the Thai-Myanmar border, and I am deeply reflecting on the travel routes and the local people's way of life here.
Malamyaung is a city well known to Thais as it appears in songs by Charan Manopetch and also has the legend of Mo Ta Ma city, which I have personally traveled to follow. This city is the center of traditional Mon culture, featuring beautiful temples and fascinating local lifestyles, different from the usual tourist cities I have visited. I stayed here for 6 nights to experience the slow life and fully enjoy every corner of this city.
Legendary City and Cross-Border Tales
If anyone has listened to the song "Ma Miya," you might feel like me wanting to find the story behind the legend yourself. I started by visiting the Kyaikhtalun Pagoda, a place that tells the love vow story of a legendary couple, then traveled to Tu Ja Ma Ra Temple located below this pagoda, and also visited other temples related to the story of the nun Ma Miya, whom I met and had deep conversations with. With photos and stories told by local nuns, I was compelled to read more.More Information about Ma MiyaTo understand the path of love and culture passed down through generations
Mon State and Travel Routes to Malamyaung
Malamyaung is the capital city of Mon State, one of the seven major states of Myanmar. This state is important both geographically and culturally, especially the border adjacent to Thailand at the Three Pagodas Pass, making travel here very convenient for tourists with passports and visas. The Mae Sot border is the most recommended land crossing, as immigration officers confirmed that crossing here is smooth and efficient.
Additionally, Nok Air offers direct flights from Mae Sot to Malamyaung, taking just a few hours with ticket prices around 1,500 THB, very convenient for those wanting to save time. For those who enjoy slow adventures, buses or sleeper buses from Yangon or Dawei to Malamyaung are available, taking about one overnight trip. There is also a boat service from Pa-an in Kayin State to Malamyaung, taking about two hours with a fare of around 150 THB, but you must check the departure days in advance as it does not operate daily.
Lifestyle and Local Food of Malamyaung
The lifestyle of the Mon people here blends with Burmese and other ethnic groups living together in the city. I found that most Mon people live in communities around Lower Mon Island and Mudon town. To experience the authentic traditional Mon lifestyle, I recommend going a bit outside the city. However, Malamyaung city itself has a charming, peaceful, and warm way of life.
The food here impressed me greatly because Malamyaung has Chinese restaurants and unique local dishes. The restaurant I liked the most isBONE GYI RESTAURANTlocated on the road along the Salween River near The Breeze Guesthouse. At this restaurant, I tasted the local Malamyaung-style stir-fried chicken with lots of garlic and a spicy flavor, as well as shrimp fried rice fragrant with a special local dipping sauce. I must say that although the restaurant had some flies, they lit candles to keep them away. This atmosphere made me feel more connected to the real lifestyle of Malamyaung people.
If you want details about the food and other restaurants I visited, you can read more atMalamyaung Local Cuisinewhich I have written comprehensively.
Accommodation and Life in Malamyaung
I stayed atThe Breeze Guesthousewhich is a budget accommodation costing about 7,000 Kyat per night (approximately 210 THB). The bathroom is shared but clean with strong water pressure. Double rooms are priced at 14 USD. It is located right by the Salween River with a clear river view. The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful, suitable for travelers who want to rest and work like me.
They offer free Wi-Fi internet service. Although the speed is not very fast, it is sufficient for checking emails or doing small work tasks. The staff and owner are kind Mon people who take care of guests like family. I felt like this was my second home.
Recommended Nearby Attractions and Activities
Besides walking along the Salween River, I also traveled to Mo Ta Ma city, the old capital of the Mon people, by hiring a motorcycle taxi from Malamyaung. The round trip was not expensive, about 100 THB (3 USD). Along the way, I stopped at Sar Phum Island, also known asShampoo Islandwhich is another beautiful natural tourist spot.
In Malamyaung city itself, I recommend visiting the night market and morning market to experience local life and shop for local products, as well as try a variety of local foods. There is also a traditional Burmese dance performance that is fascinating. If interested, you can read aboutBurmese Dancewhich I have written to enhance your travel experience.
