Tachileik: Gateway to Myanmar Beyond a Border Checkpoint
When it comes to crossing the border from Thailand into Myanmar, “Tachileik” is a name many have heard. But for me, mr.hotsia, Tachileik is not just an ordinary border crossing. It is a city full of life, people, and charm waiting to be deeply experienced.
The first time I arrived in Tachileik, I must say the feeling was a mix of excitement and novelty that you can’t find anywhere in Thailand. Passing through the rather simple immigration checkpoint, I was greeted with the friendliness of the officers. Just outside the checkpoint, there was a small market bustling with people, the calls of local vendors selling Burmese snacks, spices, and local goods made me feel like I had stepped into another world.
The Way of Life in Tachileik That mr.hotsia Must Share
Tachileik is a city that strongly preserves the traditional Burmese way of life. I strolled through narrow alleys and saw people dressed in traditional Burmese attire, riding three-wheeled bicycles known locally as “tuk-tuks,” a popular mode of transport within the city. If you want to try riding a tuk-tuk around the city like me, mr.hotsia, I recommend bargaining a bit because most prices are around 500 Thai Baht for a full-day rental, which is expensive compared to the local standard of living but worth it for the fun and unique city views.Riding a Tuk-Tuk Across the Border in Tachileik, MyanmarAn experience I will never forget.
The markets in Tachileik are also quite exciting. I tried buying freshly made local crispy Burmese snacks called 'thang taek'—sweet, rich, and very crispy—a perfect snack for walking around in the warm Burmese city atmosphere.Parents Taking Kids on a Holiday, Buying Burmese Thang Taek Snacks at Tachileik’s Wat Phra Chao RakaengI must say, anyone visiting here should not miss trying these.
Temples and Pagodas You Must Visit
Besides the markets and way of life, Tachileik also has beautiful and spiritually significant temples. Wat Phra Chao Rakaeng is one place I visited without hesitation because of its shady atmosphere and the many pigeons flying around, creating a peaceful and relaxing feeling after the hustle and bustle of the streets and markets.Visiting the Replica Shwedagon Pagoda and Wat Phra Chao Rakaeng in Tachileik, Myanmar. If you like something unusual and different, try visiting the Buddha statues that face visitors at Wat Phra Yok in Tachileik. I myself saw this for the first time in my life. These statues don’t face the pagoda like usual temples but surprisingly face the visitors.Unusual to see Buddha statues facing visitors at Wat Phra Yok, Tachileik, MyanmarIt’s a curious peculiarity that invites reflection and absorption of the cultural differences here.
Travel and Convenience
For those interested in visiting Tachileik, the journey is not as complicated as you might think. From Chiang Rai, you can conveniently cross the Mae Sai checkpoint to Tachileik. There are plenty of tuk-tuks and buses available. There is also the Mongyawng bus station, a bus stop connecting to nearby towns like Mueang Yong and Mueang Yu.Mongyawng bus station - Bus stop for Mueang Yong, Tachileik, and Mueang YuI have used this service myself and was impressed by the convenience and friendliness of the providers.
Another thing I noticed and want to share is the gas station in Tachileik, which is very different from what we are used to in Thailand. The Thachilak gas station here looks simple but has its own charm. It reflects the local life and simplicity of living in Myanmar.Thachilak gas station Myanmar in TachileikIf you want to see an authentic unembellished way of life, this is a small spot I think you should stop by.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions of Tachileik
For me, Tachileik is not just a border town to pass through. It is a city full of stories, lifestyles, and fascinating culture. Traveling here allowed me to see the real life of Burmese people, taste local food, and experience the tranquility of beautiful temples. There are also markets and friendly people, making every step in Tachileik meaningful and memorable.
For those who love in-depth travel and don’t just want to cross the border and rush elsewhere, I, mr.hotsia, recommend experiencing Tachileik yourself. You will discover that there is much more to explore here than you think.
