Shwedagon Pagoda, Tachileik: A Symbol of Faith and History on Myanmar's Borderland

When talking about Tachileik in Myanmar, many might think of the unique border crossing or the lively border atmosphere. But for me, mr.hotsia, one thing you must not miss is visitingShwedagon PagodaThis place is a destination filled with historical stories and deep faith connected to the Burmese people.

The Shwedagon Pagoda in Tachileik is a replica built to imitate the original Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. However, because it is located in a border town with a different atmosphere, I felt a more intimate and local way of life here compared to the grand pagoda in the capital.

Field Story: Shwedagon Pagoda in Tachileik

When I arrived in Tachileik, the first thing that caught my eye was the peacefulness and shade around this replica Shwedagon Pagoda. According to the legend I studied earlier, the original Shwedagon Pagoda was built over 2,500 years ago. The story says two merchant brothers visited the Buddha in India and received eight strands of his hair, of which only two were enshrined in the pagoda. This is considered a sacred relic highly revered by the Burmese.

The original pagoda in Yangon once stood over 90 meters tall and was adorned with thousands of diamonds and rubies. But in Tachileik, although the pagoda is not as grand, it evokes a simple and warm sacred feeling. I also found that the people here have deep respect and faith in the pagoda. Everyone must remove their shoes and walk clockwise to pay respect, which I followed sincerely.

Live Experience by Shwedagon Pagoda

While waiting to pay homage, I saw a fresh sugarcane juice stall in front of the pagoda. The owner skillfully turned the pressing machine by hand. Fresh sugarcane juice at 10 baht per glass was perfect for a tired traveler like me. The sweet and refreshing taste gave a great energy boost.

For photography lovers, I recommend exploring around the pagoda because you can see pigeons flying peacefully among the shady trees. The atmosphere is similar to Wat Phra Chao Rakaeng in Tachileik, which also has many pigeons.Read more about Wat Phra Chao RakaengPlaces I have visited

Traveling to Tachileik and Connections to Nearby Towns

Traveling to Tachileik is not too complicated. I tried taking a tuk-tuk across the border from the Thai side, and there are also regular buses stopping atMongyawng bus stationin Mongyawng town, which is another important connection point in the area. For those interested in visiting Muang Yu or nearby towns, it is quite convenient.

Additionally, I stopped to experience the atmosphere atTachileik gas stationwhich looks simple but offers another interesting glimpse into the daily life of Burmese people in this border area.

mr.hotsia's heartfelt feelings about Shwedagon Pagoda in Tachileik

Personally, I like this place for its simplicity and naturalness. It is not as grand as the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, but it has its own charm. The local lifestyle and faith are truly palpable, which I think is a unique and memorable charm for cultural travelers like me.
