Guide Jai Luang Takes You to Kengtung Kengtung Travel Information
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to explore Kengtung, or as the locals call it “Kengtung,” a small town in Shan State of Myanmar. I had the chance to visit and experience it myself. This town is full of the charm of Tai Yai culture that remains authentic, with a warm atmosphere unlike the big cities I have been to.
Kengtung is located in Shan State in eastern Myanmar, near the Thailand-Myanmar border. There are several ways to get here, but I will share my real experience using the local guide “Jai Luang,” whom I consider the heart of this trip. He is not just an ordinary guide but a travel companion who helps us understand the lifestyle, community, and realities of the local people.
For those with a passport, I recommend getting a visa at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok before traveling. This allows you to stay in Myanmar for up to one month, convenient for both flying and land travel. If you don’t have a passport, you can still use your ID card to get a Myanmar entry pass (valid for 7 days), but you must hire a guide who charges about 1,000 baht per day. My guide Jai Luang is trustworthy and deeply knowledgeable about Kengtung and nearby areas.
The way I traveled to Kengtung was by car from Tachileik, passing through a route with very beautiful scenery on both sides. I must say some parts of the road can be rough, but Jai Luang took care of the paperwork at checkpoints and ensured safety, so I felt at ease. Importantly, people here speak Thai quite well, making communication easy without language worries.
Upon arriving in Kengtung, the first thing that impressed me was the morning market full of colors from the Tai Yai people, traditional clothing, local products, and fresh food. I tried Kengtung-style Khao Soi, which was rich in flavor but not too spicy, blended with herbs and spices with a unique aroma. There were also snacks like Jok and fermented pork sausage, local dishes not to be missed.
Kengtung also has ancient temples I visited, such as Wat Phra That Jai Luang, a revered stupa by the people of Kengtung. From there, you can see a wide panoramic view of the town. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for relaxation and calming the mind.
For those who love trekking and nature, around Kengtung are mountains and tribal villages that still maintain traditional ways of life. I had the opportunity to visit a Tai Lue village where the language is still spoken and culture strongly preserved. I saw hand weaving and intricate silverwork, an experience hard to find elsewhere.
If you want to know Kengtung more deeply, I recommend contacting guide Jai Luang directly. He has true knowledge and understanding of this area and can professionally arrange accommodation, restaurants, and transportation. He also recommends lesser-known attractions, adding a special touch to your trip.

If you enjoy adventure and want to explore other towns in Shan State, I suggest continuing to Hakha, the capital of Chin State, which I have shared my experience in the articleTraveling to HakhaandHakhaa town with cool weather and beautiful mountain scenery, perfect for those who want to experience different nature and culture.
Finally, I, mr.hotsia, want to say that Kengtung is not just a place to take photos or pass through, but a town where you learn about the Tai Yai people's way of life, experiencing the reality of life and culture present in every corner of the town, whether people, markets, or even conversations with guide Jai Luang, who is like a true travel companion.
