Mong Yong, Shan State: A small town full of the charm of the Tai Yai

On December 6, 2015, Imr.hotsiaalong with two friends, Khun Chanchai and Khun Annae On Tour, traveled to Mong Yong, a small town in Shan State, Myanmar. For this trip, we rented a car with a driver for 3 days and 2 nights at 7,000 baht, and hired a local guide for 6 days at 6,000 baht to ensure convenience and a genuine cultural experience.

Traveling to Mong Yong requires a passport with a Myanmar visa only, as Mong Yong does not allow temporary travel cards. Our journey started from Tachileik, about 180 kilometers from Mong Yong. The route passes through Pyak or Phae town, a halfway rest stop, before turning right onto the 80-kilometer road to Mong Yong. Although the road condition is not very good, it offers a full view of Shan State’s lifestyle and natural scenery.

Route and Travel Methods to Mong Yong

For travelers not using rental cars, buses from Tachileik to Mong Yong are available for about 200 baht, taking 4-5 hours. If using a local guide, they will assist in contacting immigration officers and village chiefs to notify the trip and handle paperwork, which is an important step for traveling to less-touristed towns like Mong Yong.

Additionally, traveling with passport + visa offers flexible return routes, such as flying from other Myanmar cities to Tachileik or Kengtung, then continuing to Mae Sai easily. Some Myanmar airports allow entry without a visa in certain cases, which is convenient for travelers who prefer mobility.

Overview of Mong Yong and Tai Yai Atmosphere

Mong Yong is an ancient town with over 200 years of history. It was the origin of the Lamphun people in Thailand who speak Yong language and follow traditional Tai Lue customs. Upon arrival, you will notice a clear contrast between traditional wooden houses and newly built concrete homes. Although electricity is only available from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, the warmth of the locals makes me feel like traveling back in time.

Interestingly, Mong Yong has few Thai or Western tourists. This small town can be explored in just a few hours on foot. Most locals farm rice, raise cattle, and live simply. The language spoken here is easily understood by Thais because Thai is widely spoken and Thai TV is commonly watched. This is one charm I,mr.hotsiareally like because it feels like a close and friendly cross-cultural journey.

Morning Market and Local Food in Mong Yong

One activity I never miss when arriving in Mong Yong is strolling through the morning market. Here, you can find spicy local dishes and fresh ingredients from the area, such as sticky rice, grilled pork, and fresh vegetables sold simply by the locals. Tasting local food in this atmosphere made me feel the sincerity and charm of the Tai Yai community in Mong Yong.

Nature Around the Town and Farming Lifestyle

Mong Yong is located on a plain between high mountains, with vast rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Most locals are farmers, especially rice farmers. During harvest season, you can see cattle peacefully roaming the fields, a scene that made me feel calm and warmly touched. It is possible to continue traveling to Muang Yu, but a special permit is required. I chose to use the services of local guide U Sai Loung Kyauk, an expert in Tai Yai culture and trekking in Kengtung, which made the journey safer and more enjoyable.

Connecting Tai Yai Culture with Kengtung and Shan State

For those interested in continuing to Kengtung, more details can be found atTravel to Kengtungwhich is also a culturally and historically important city for the Tai Yai people. Traveling in Shan State has a unique charm different from other cities, such as Hakha, which I have visited and shared my experience inTravel to HakhaandOld Chin Houses in Hakhawhich add more dimensions to traveling in Myanmar.

Summary of Experience with Mong Yong by mr.hotsia

My trip to Mong Yong was filled with unique impressions not found elsewhere in Myanmar. This small community still preserves traditional ways of life and sincerely welcomes travelers. Being able to speak with locals fluent in Thai and experience authentic Tai Yai culture made me feel like I discovered a new side of a neighboring country just within reach.

For those who enjoy peaceful travel, want to experience real village life, and appreciate beautiful nature, I,mr.hotsiarecommend Mong Yong as a must-visit destination in Shan State, Myanmar.
