Recommended Restaurants in Mawlamyine: Mawlamyine Stir-Fried Chicken and Unique Local Flavors
Hello, I ammr.hotsiaToday, I will take you to taste Chinese and local dishes in Mawlamyine, Shan State, Myanmar. I had the chance to travel there and try the food firsthand. I can say there are more great dishes here than you might expect, especially the local stir-fried chicken called “Mawlamyine Stir-Fried Chicken” that I loved so much I had to come back several times.
The restaurant I recommend is calledBONE GYI RESTAURANTIt is located on the Salween Riverfront Road. If you stay at The Breeze Guest House, it's very easy to get there. Just walk out of the guesthouse, turn right, and walk about 200 meters. The restaurant is right at the street corner on the right-hand side. I have saved the GPS coordinates in the photos posted on the website for everyone's convenience who wants to follow my footsteps to visit Mawlamyine.
The signature dish I recommend here is the “Mawlamyine-style Stir-Fried Chicken,” locally called BONE GYI. It is stir-fried chicken with lots of garlic and cooked without MSG. I asked them, and they call MSG “Kosumo.” If you want it without MSG, just say “No Kosumo,” and they will prepare it as requested.
The taste of the stir-fried chicken here is definitely unique. The fragrant garlic aroma, perfectly crispy outside and tender inside without being dry. This dish blends Chinese and local Mawlamyine flavors harmoniously. Whether you eat it with plain rice or shrimp fried rice, which they also do very well, there is a special dipping sauce served too. It's so delicious you'll want to order more.
The prices are reasonable. The local fried chicken costs about 120 baht, and shrimp fried rice is 100 baht. It's very good value considering the taste and atmosphere. One thing I noticed is that the restaurant tends to have quite a few flies because of nearby trash, but they manage this by lighting candles to keep flies away, so the dining atmosphere remains comfortable.
Besides food, they offer a variety of drinks including wine, liquor, and Burmese beer. The wine here is more expensive than in Laos, so I didn't try it due to budget limits. But for those who enjoy drinking, there is a full selection available.
I first ate here on October 27, 2013. I clearly remember it was a wonderful afternoon meal. I ordered the Mawlamyine-style fried chicken with plain rice and sipped a little Burmese beer. I chatted while filming a 20-minute video. It was a simple but very happy atmosphere. Before returning to Thailand, I stopped by again to have a perfect farewell meal in Mawlamyine.
