Kayah State 10/10: Horse Carriage Ride Around Loikaw, Kayah State, Myanmar
When it comes to traveling in Myanmar that mr.hotsia has experienced, Kayah State is one of the most interesting destinations that still preserves the authentic indigenous tribal lifestyle. Especially Loikaw, the main city of this state, where I had the chance to take a slow horse carriage ride through the old town, enjoying the atmosphere of the streets and houses that firmly retain the traditional charm of the Kayah people.
Riding a horse carriage in Loikaw is not much different from horse carriage rides in other tourist cities in Myanmar, such as Bagan, which I have described in an article.Horse Carriage Ride in Bagan, MyanmarBut here, the feeling is distinctly different because the horse carriage takes us along small red dirt roads that carry the genuine rural scent, unembellished. The carriage seats two people, and the driver is a local who speaks very little English. However, due to the peaceful and unhurried nature of the town, traveling by horse carriage offers me a full view of the daily life of the Kayah people.
Main Streets and Lifestyle
The streets in Loikaw are neither large nor modern but are full of life from the small community, including shops, street stalls, fresh markets, and houses that still feature simple architecture made from bamboo and hardwood, surrounded by mountains and nature embracing the town.
Early in the morning, I walked to Loikaw’s morning market. Here, fresh local agricultural products, fresh vegetables, exotic fruits, and local foods like fragrant grilled sticky rice with pork are available. Most locals here are from the Kayah tribe and other tribes with distinct cultural identities. What I like most is exchanging life stories with them. Despite language barriers, smiles and kindness speak volumes.
Horse Carriage Ride Around the Town: mr.hotsia’s Perspective
After riding the horse carriage along Loikaw’s main streets, the key charm of this town is its simplicity and tranquility, rare to find in big cities. The carriage passed small villages, roadside shops, and ancient temples located at street corners. At times, the carriage stopped to let me walk around the community market, watching locals negotiate prices—a fresh and fascinating life scene.
While riding the horse carriage, I saw children playing along the streets wearing traditional tribal costumes. The bright colors of the native outfits contrasted with the red earth and the mountains in the background. This image felt heartwarming and meaningful to mr.hotsia, more than visiting major tourist attractions.
Connection to Travel in Kachin State and Indawgyi Lake
If you are interested in deeper travel in Myanmar, Kayah State connects with Kachin State to the north, which I have written about in an article.Kachin StateThere, you can experience the origin of the Irrawaddy River and Indawgyi Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, which is also an important wildlife sanctuary.Indawgyi LakeHome to many wildlife species and rare birds in nature, ideal for nature lovers and photographers.
Food and Local Markets
In Loikaw, local food is outstanding and worth trying. I tasted sticky rice with curry cooked with local spices and native herbs. The flavor was rich yet balanced, unique and delicious. There are also street vendors selling freshly made bread and sweets, perfect snacks I enjoyed with hot tea in the morning, as I have shared in an article.Food in Bagan, MyanmarAlthough from another city, it reflects the care for local Myanmar cuisine that impressed me.
Loikaw’s market offers a variety of goods, including handwoven fabrics, silverware, and Kayah tribal handicrafts, perfect for tourists seeking unique souvenirs that tell the local culture well.
Travel Tips
If you plan to visit Kayah State, mr.hotsia recommends preparing your travel in advance because transportation is not as convenient as in big cities. Riding horse carriages and walking in Loikaw will help you absorb the atmosphere and get to know the people better. Talking with horse carriage drivers or local vendors will give you a deeper experience than rushed sightseeing.
Don’t forget to bring a face mask for dusty roads and suitable shoes for walking on dirt roads. Also, exchange enough Myanmar Kyat because cash is still widely used here.
